Has anyone done this? I'm thinking of visiting friends in Spain but want to avoid Sleazy Jet and make the journey part of the holiday. I understand the French /Spanish overnight trainhotel sleeper train from Paris to Madrid is an enjoyable way to travel

Sounds a brilliant adventure. I rode the train from Barcelona to Alicante many years ago (like London to Glasgow i recall) Pretty decent and a good adventure. long journey for you though, down to Cordoba!?

maybe you could start with a cruise from Portsmouth to santander? we have done plymouth to santander but the drive to plymouth was a pain- i think portsmouth would be a better start point. i thinnk it is brittany ferries

Got stuck in a compartment with a number of yanks worried that they wouldn't eat real cheddar cheese from Wisconsin for years.

Definitely fly. Unless you actually wanted to make Paris part of your trip. Then that's a bit different.

Getting the train from one part of Spain to another would be great but your route just seems too long a journey and so not really worth it IMO.

I am doing this at the end of the month - eurostar to paris, paris to madrid. i will let you know how it goes! Its not the cheapest way to travel - though we have booked a cabin thing rather than seats.

I've done a private cabin with a partner from Paris to Florence and it was great fun and a very realxing way to travel.

I much preferred the experience to flying.

Downsides: expense; the food was just as bad if not worse and expensive; we arrived very early in the morning in Florence and thus couldn't check into our hotel for that night so had to wander around without having been able to shower or change after a 20hour train journey. Not nice.
