To those of you who are still without a secondary school place for 2011, there is an open morning at Deptford Green School, Amersham Vale,SE146LQ for 9.15am on Thursday 24th March. This is a mixed comprehensive school, in the borough of Lewisham, for a prospectus, email [email protected] . This is purely for those who don't have a place in one of the schools they applied to and for 2011 entry!

Hi Renata,

That's a useful suggestion and some might find it acceptable but some parents I've spoken to have now visited this school and were so shocked that they're now applying for Dulwich College Prep School and working out how on earth they can afford to do this.

Hello James,

I have in the last couple of weeks been helping parents from wards all over the south of the borough. It is clear that readers of the ED forum span quite a distance and for some, Deptford Green is close to where they live, and convenient to travel to, particularly those close to the Lewisham boundary. I don't find your comments above particularly helpful.

I know parents whose children are going to Deptford Green school in September, they have seen the school and applied to it on their CAF form. They have spoken very highly of the school, which in 2010 had 69% of pupils obtaining 5 GCSEs and for 53% this included English and Maths. For the information of interested parents, like a couple of Southwark Schools, it is a building site at the moment (being rebuilt under Schools for the Future), but this will be completed by September. The school website is www.deptfordgreen.lewisham.sch.uk so that parent can look for themselves. I don't think that Dulwich College Prep comes into the equation for many Southwark parents! The shakedown of school places has already started, so over the next few weeks there will be movement on school waiting lists.

If I hear of any other schools that have places and opportunities for visits, I will post on this forum.

that is a most unhelpful post. And shocking that a councillor should attempt to put parents off a school. Surely parents are quite capable of making their own decisions.

And I doubt Duwich College has loads of spaces, even if you could afford it.

    • Ohh dear.  Fireworks can be great fun.  Where I used to live the kids would have firework wars/games.  Watching them was more enjoyable than watching  TV. (Which you could hardly hear due to the pops and bangs).  It's not like anyone/anything could stop them. I would still prefer organised public displays that are affordable.   And I agree that fireworks cause problems for wild life, pets and people.   It seems to be one of those things that just happens so we have to put up with it.  But it is still not as problematic here as in other areas in London - that's for sure.
    • I made sure to set off a few today just to rile you guys up 😇😂 Always looking for something to criticise
    • Ugly...maybe..does it bother me..NO! I think its somehow reassuring to see theres still phoneboxes around. East Dulwich may  be getrified but there may well be some elderly people who don't have mobiles and kids who may have lost theirs adults ditto etc etc. I'd rather keep it than lose it...just because i don't use it does'nt mean its not needed.  there are many eyesores in the modern world not all of them as potentially useful.
    • I strongly recommend Balayage salon in Lordship lane as everytime I visit, they make me feel very spicial with thier profisionalism and care.   I have been going there for the last 10 years maybe more, and will never exchange them for any other. They are profisional, welcoming and they also always have an offer. I feel like a new woman every time. X
