Hi ladies, wanted to see if anyone had similar problems with any of their little ones?

Trying to get a urine sample is the biggest nightmare!! I've been so stressed for 2 days trying. But its done. After the use of U-bags (ERGH!) and then just literally trying to catch it. In the end she ended up witholding for 5 hours without a nappy on and then after 20 minutes of literally drip drops on the floor she stood in the bath and I got a sample. It was horrible, you could see she was getting stressed holding it in but I dont know why?! I'm fine if she wee's on my floor even she knows that!!!

Anyway, I tested urine last night (doctor gave me equipment to do so at home) and found infection and blood in urine, took same sample to doctors today for testing and they found only blood. Now why is blood in the urine? I thought she had a UTI before (previous thread) but was fine after a few days and has only started up again within the last 3 days. With chesty cough and slight cold, lots of temperature. Even today she has had a nappy on since 10.30am and only just done a wee in it now. It was bone dry a minute ago. Surely thats long to withold for a toddler? She drinks enough, although a little on the low side over the past few days but still. I don't see how she can last that long.

Anyway got antibiotics and ibuprofen prescribed. Will start course tomorrow. But I just wondered what the reasons were for blood in the urine specifically, and if anyone has experienced it in a young child?!

Seen this often in UTI's in babies/children - often it's in microscopic proportions (not normally visible to the eye) and is related to the infection... one of the other things that is tested for on the urine dipsticks is leucocytes which are white blood cells (the infection fighting cells).

The reduced drinking/weeing is likely to be due to it having been painful to pass urine over the last few days. Might be worth getting sneaky and offering ice pops or similar to sneak water in!

I'd start the AB's asap rather than wait till tomorrow, they take approx 48hrs to properly kick in but can often see some improvement sooner.

Hope she's better soon xx

I dipsticked the sample last night as soon as I caught it, it showed positive for a small amount of leucocytes and blood in the urine. When doctor tested the same sample today (by then was 16 hours old, had been kept in fridge) it showed negative for any leucocytes but positive for blood still. I was told to wait for 60secs before reading results by first doctor, then second doctor said it didnt need that long. Today looking into the background I did see the test had turned positive for leucocytes but doctor said it had been too long to read it as a positive, it had been just over 60 secs. So contradictory. I suspect it is a UTI and so have 3 doctors now, todays doctor said without the positive leucocytes test it wouldnt be a UTI. We only realised after entering the 2nd pharmacy for the antibiotic that wasnt in stock anywhere that she had prescribed 10x the dose. I was actually thinking to myself 50ml thats a lot to take 3 times a day. Phew!!

Buggie, thank you for that. I would start the anti-bios tonight but it makes me confused if I don't start them at the beginning of a day. If I give her a dose tonight, we have 3 days worth so when would the next dose be given (tomorrow morning?) and when would the course finish (Sunday night?)

BB - I told the doctor I would get another sample for testing at the end of the course, I want to know if definitely gone. Ho hum, have to go through all the aggro again. Must be done though.

Try getting some cranberry down your little one. (The drinks are no good, too much sugar and not enough of the active cranberry components.) Cranberry has a molecule which helps make the walls of the urinary bladder and tract too slippery for bacteria to adhere. This helps the body clear the infection and also makes urinating much eaiser and less painful.

Look for something like cranberry sauce. You can probably give it to your daughter in a syringe. As an adult, I find 2-3 Tablespoons 3x daily for a couple days works wonders. You could try giving something like 10 mL 2-3 times a day to your daughter.

I've had a UTI so bad that I was weeing visible blood. I wasn't able to get to see a doctor for two days, and cranberry really saved me from total agony. Don't stop the antibiotics, but do try cranberry for your LO.

I hope your daughter feels better soon. xx

I'd suggest exactly what we do in hospital - make a mini drug chart - grid with days/doses and tick it off as you give it.

Guessing it's 3 times a day so ideally every 8hrs, if starting tonight will indeed finish lunchtime/mid afternoon Sunday. If out of confusion one extra dose was given it wouldn't be earth-shattering... far better than not completing the course.

I've also seen cranberry tablets and powder before perhaps try health matters. My youngest daughter had this recently and turns out it was thrush caused by the fact she was wiping herself either the wrong way or not very well at school (she's 3 1/2). Just check to see if it's not this (red rash and burning when weeing). We used canesten to clear this up.

Good luck hope Little one is better soon.

    • Since you’re clearly not experiencing what we are I’m not sure I agree with any of your points. I also asked for anyone else having a similar problem… it’s absolutely fine if you’re not but I’d appreciate less of the “go live your life”. There is no need to comment with that tone, it doesn’t provide us with any help for the matter. Nor is it polite. We’re a very kind family simply not wanting damage and don’t find the actions necessary. It’s been the same driver/delivery for a while and this never used to happen. I wouldn’t post this on the forum if it wasn’t getting so frustrating. Again, the kids and myself have kindly asked for this to stop a few times with no success. We all work hard for our living and would never want (nor are we trying) to rid someone of their livelihood. But similarly, I don’t find it fair. Please feel free to PM me if anyone has any advise or shares the same.
    • And now we have the worst labour government in many many decades who, by moving to your position on the right, are ushering in a far right reform government. Well done you.
    • You implied he did a good job in your first paragraph when you said you would have hated to see Corbyn lead the country through Covid - the alternative being Johnson, presumably? With the results we all saw. Unite - you have a problem with unions? Who work hard to see that their members get a fair deal in their workplace? How exactly are these people and groups "all as bad as each other"? In what way? Labour "purging their party of the far-left" has given us a weak prime minister who has apparently deserted any "left" (aka caring for other people and having decent moral principles) leanings he ever had. Which is why people appear to be leaving Labour in droves and voting, or intending to vote, Green or Lib Dem or for an independent Left candidate. Starmer has shot himself in the foot, in my opinion. But what would I know. What worked?! I don't know enough about what you are talking about to comment, but "believing" you know the reason someone did something does not make it true. I don't believe that Corbyn ever got "starstruck" or "forgot about his politics", but if you can provide evidence that those things are true, then fair enough. I don't think you can, though.
