actuarygi
While walking my dog last Friday I noticed that a piece of asbestos was just standing against a wall near the intersection of Fellbrigg and Northcross Road. From the photo you can see that someone put on a sign that read "Dangers. Asbestos. Please do not touch." I have contacted the Southwark council a few days ago but I haven't heard anything from them. Does anyone know whether it has been removed ? I am quite surprised that asbestos material can be dumped just like that and exposed to the element. It is a highly dangerous material and there is no safety threshold for breathing in asbestos fibres that may be floating in the air. B&G
Oh dear. That's dreadful. Have you contacted James Barber? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/166918-exposed-asbestos-on-fellbrigg-road/#findComment-1175057 Share on other sites
kford
That type of asbestos, like roofing panels, is pretty stable as long as it's not smashed up. It's the fluffy insulation/lagging sort that's really dangerous. ths0105
well, the next thing that will happen is someone will smash it up and children etc walking past will touch it. I have reported this to Southwark, too. Penguin68
Agreed kford - as it stands (literally) in the picture it is clearly undamaged and un-compromised and poses no risk - but if it were to be broken or stamped on in such an exposed position there is a chance that fibres might be released. It is the size of the (tiny) particles when inhaled which cause health problems, asbestos as such is not actually poisonous (and is excellent for insulation and fire inhibition). I hope it was left there for only a short period before collection and disposal. What you must not do is saw or drill asbestos. i*Rate
Try and call the council again and get it collected if they do collect it. I understand that it has to be double wrapped for safety before they will actually handle it.I emailed Southwark about some Japanese Knotweed growing in that road about two years ago, no response, and it's about four feet tall now.Good luck with the asbestos.
