Hello

Have booked family hol to US. Have driven there before but have a couple of queries:

Am I right in thinking that I have to carry with me my Insurance Docs (and Passport) when I am driving? Recollect man at Disney being irate with me about this!

Are you allowed to turn right on a red light?

Journey time by car from Orlando to Everglades. Looked at Google maps and it says 4-5 hours. May stay overnight near there/ Miami- any recommendations re: cheapish hotels?

Also if you buy an Amazon Kindle over there I assume it will workover here- is that correct? how much are they over there anyway?

That's it for now!

Thanks.

Absolutely definitely carry all docs with you when driving. Yes, you can turn right on a red although you don't have right of way so make sure there are no cars coming (particularly confusing at a crossroad junction when traffic can come from effectively ahead of you as well as from the left).

My parents live in Florida (hence knowing the above). Re: the Kindle, mum bought hers in the US and could read it fine over here but she had problems buying books for it whilst she was here. I would strongly recommend looking into that further before you purchase just in case. In the back of my mind, I think you have to buy one from the UK.

You must carry a valid drivers license at all times. If it does not have a photograph, you will need a passport to accompany it. Some states allow right on red, others do not. There are often also "no right turn" signs hanging on the overhead traffic lights.

Not sure about the kindle, but, the obvious thing is it would have a different plug. As stated above, there might be different licensing for uk/usa books so do look into that.

Your driving estimate is probably fairly accurate...

Have fun!

You can buy your kindle there, about $170 with WiFi and the plugs are okay because you charge it through a USB from your laptop. What you will need to do though is register it to Amazon UK when you buy it or you are restricted to Amaazon.com and then you can only order from the one you are registered with.

If you have a Florida address to send it to it might be a good idea to order before you go so it gets there while you are there. Don't think you can buy them in the shop so it has to be ordered. Mine took ages but it was around Christmas.

When you make a right turn at a red light in the States, you must come to a complete stop before you make the turn. In other words, you cannot make a 'rolling stop' then turn.

If you cannot produce a driving license, photo ID, and car insurance when requested, you may be held in custody or issued a citation until you can proivde the requested documents. (Although in practice you will probably just get a stern telling off b/c you are British.)

Have fun!

    • Happy birthday! I've just read a bunch of your reviews and really enjoyed it. You write Interestingly without being too ornate, and you manage to give a really good insight into the "vibe" of a place as well as the food. Totally agree with your review of Rocca - it's simple, great food in a friendly atmosphere at a completely reasonable price, esp considering the location.
    • Hello,  I am a 52-year old mother and an integrative counsellor who lives and works in West Dulwich, SE21. In mid January I am starting a new training in Parent Infant Psychotherapy (helping parents to bond with their babies), and a key component of the course is a 24-month infant observation.  I’m looking for someone who will be giving birth ideally in January or February and who would allow me to observe their baby for one hour a week until the baby’s second birthday. The baby can be awake or asleep, playing, feeding, eating or interacting with carer/s and family members - whatever they normally do at that time.  The purpose of the observation is to enable me to gain a thorough knowledge of very early infant development and to develop the capacity to maintain an observationally minded and non-judgemental attitude in my work as an infant-parent psychotherapist.  I will provide enhanced DBS clearance and I’m happy to answer any questions.  Please forward this email to anyone who might be interested, email me at [email protected] or call me on 07949716043. I would be extremely grateful for any leads. Many thanks,  Millie  Millie Burton, MBACP Integrative Counsellor [email protected] millieburton.com
    • I keep my promises...had the Sweet & Sour Chicken.  It was great - the best sweet and sour dish I've ever had. The chicken itself was good and the sauce seemed home made with real vegetables and pineapple - it is NOT the red sugar sauce goo you get elsewhere.  The Korean fried chicken was very good but the sweet chili sauce was much more chili than sweet - just far too spicy for me. There is a honey something sauce that I will get next time. Egg fried veggie rice was good as a side.  We also ordered the chicken katsu curry which was polished off so quickly I didn't get to taste it. It looked very good tho. SD is not like Magic Wok used to be - cheap and filling but junk food. (Don't get me wrong - I went often to Magic Wok). SD's food is much higher quality, real ingredients, chunky portions, freshly prepared. I'll be back, for sure.
    • I saw these pair of ducks opposite Peckham rye today not quite sure what breed they are as I've never seen ones like them before
