My baby boy started grabbing food and putting it in his mouth at around 5 months (an apple I was eating, a banana his sister was having next to him). Even with the apple which was very tart he was super enthusiastic and upset when I took it away from him.

So I started weaning him at 5 months (I was going to wait until 6) and to my complete surprise he seemed to like trying different fruit/veg - completely unlike his sister who could not have been less impressed four years ago.

He turns 6 months in a few days and I was thinking it is probably time to introduce some protein. To all of you 'early' weaners when did you start with protein? Any advice what to try first? I was thinking chicken mixed with veg.

Also he seems to really like mouthing raw peeled apples and carrots etc. but has a very sensitive gag reflex and he throws up easily. I would like to give him some finger foods along the mushed up stuff but worried about him throwing up all food/milk. Should I try anyway? He has two (very sharp) bottom teeth and is probably getting a third as he is teething like a maniac!

I would definitely try what ever you feel like trying! If he throws it up and isn't bothered by the fact then it's more work for you cleaning but otherwise no harm done. You could try giving him a large piece of meat to chew on for flavour and see if he likes it, if not then it's maybe too soon?

(I didn't wean early sorry have just re read the post but if you trusted him to let you know when he wanted to try 'real' food then why not trust him to let you know with protein too..)

Little Saff grabbed a banana out of my hands at 4.5 months. She was able to hold it in her own hands and eat it, so Hubby and I figured developmentally she was ready. We started very, very gradually to offer her things like breadcrust dipped in yoghert, or a slice of orange to suck on. By 6 months old she was eating pretty much whatever we ate (minus the salt/fat of course), and we've never looked back. No jars of baby food here! :) Little Saff just loved baby led weaning. She was the text book BLW baby.

Lamb was one of her first favourite foods, cut off strips that are long enough for Baby to hold. A stalk of lightly steamed broccoli dipped in plain yoghurt or humous was always a winner. She did do a lot of gagging at first, but she was always fine. Many babies have a sensitive gag reflex. It's nature's way of protecting them.

We don't have any allergies in our family, and Little Saff was healthy otherwise. So there weren't any food that we didn't offer. Even if you do have a history of allergies, you can still offer a variety of foods. Just keep an eye out for allergy symptoms.

I think my copy of BLW is floating around the Forum somewhere if you want to borrow it. The library has a copy too. It is a short and interesting read.

Happy weaning!

    • Oh now you're coming over all defensive. What happened to the nice Sue, because since the early part of the year your approach seems to have changed and you've become much more challenging. No you have not broken any rules and even if you had why would I involve Admin, that's a ludicrous thing to say.  Take care Sue.
    • I was the opposite of you. I never felt particularly happy around Brixton late at night - I didn't know it that well. Do you remember the name of the late- night Irish pub opposite the railway arches near the BR station? Was it Mulligan's? Brannigan's? To be fair, until the East London Line extension, Rye Lane walking south wasn't a favourite of mine after dark either. The only pub left on there was The Hope, which was in the other direction. It felt very bleak. I think that makes a huge difference. When The Gowlett was boarded up, Amott Road felt very different. It's like a beacon now. Pub violence does seem to have had its day in inner London. Maybe it's a result of the disappearance of pool tables, flat-roofed pubs and cheap Stella offers. I bet you could still find a Saturday night kick-up in New Addington or the  Becontree estate in Dagenham. Definitely. Pubs next to stations, kebab shops and ironically named nightclubs are all to be avoided in smaller places. The weirdest place I've ever had random trouble was in a club in St. Ives in Cambridgeshire.  I think it was called 'Options'. It was the only club there.  See also 'Jekylls' nightclub in Hyde, Manchester - a truly dreadful place where getting thrown out for fighting was infinitely preferable to spending the evening in there and coming out stinking of stale chip fat. I took a kicking in 'Kingsway Kebabs' in Swansea after a night in 'The Aviary' (so named because it was 'full of birds') nightclub. But that wasn't so random. It was a local girl, who gave me a leathering because I'd run off for a large chicken doner, rather than dance with her to 'Criticize' by Alexander O'Neal. Sorry, Sue, I've digressed a little.  To answer your question, I think London feels relatively safe overall.
    • I’m happy to report that I got a much earlier prescription review than the 22 September.  Not sure what that was down to but I was sent a text to say to expect a telephone call on a certain day and time for earlier this week.  It was with a pharmacist and not a doctor.  I was later told to expect a telephone call on call on both the 19 and 23 September.  They are really pushing the boat out. Not complaining. Also, Dr. Shivji is back working.
    • "Firing"? "Demanding"? A "habit on here of 'demanding' answers"?  Crikey. I didn't say you "should" do anything! This is a forum.  For discussion. I will say whatever I like and ask whatever I like,  within the forum rules, as can anybody else  Please move your issues with me to the thread I have started in the lounge on feeling safe in London, because this is a thread about a burglary in Lacon Road. If you continue to post your complaints about me on this thread, I shall not respond, so do feel free. Or if you think I have broken any forum rules, do feel free to report me to admin.
