I wish that were true (at least there'd be a chance of them doing something more productive when they get out). Sadly, I suspect they'll get an education in further barbarity and general criminality.

the fact they were giggling and laughing maybe means they aren't hardened criminals yet and there is hope.

Really John? Is that what you glean from the fact that the defendants were openly joking and giggling in the Crown Court throughout their sentencing hearing (as the Court was played video of several of their robberies including one where a woman's earring was ripped out)? That's a good sign?

I'm afraid in the real world its a sign that they are hardened to the Courts and don't give a monkey's, or have any respect for the Judge and are not afraid of going to prison. I suspect if you worked in the legal system and regularly witnessed the attitude of quite a number of those convicted of robberies like this, you would not be quite so naive. They didn't just start committing crimes just this last year, obviously!

It is widely reported that they all had 'numerous' previous criminal convictions starting in their early teens and were also at the time of their robberies subject to criminal behaviour orders (and so were apparently completely unconcerned about those as well).

Mopeds used in these attacks are often stolen so offenders are untraceable.

Mopeds have been stolen at knife point.. Moped 'Gangs' have used acid to steal bikes.

This is part of a Massive crime spree.

If these crimes were being carried out by 'Religious Extremists' they would be treated as Acts of Terrorism.

Which is in effect what they are, and need to be treated as such.

4 years (out in 18 months) is not enough. Realistic sentencing is needed. In a Hard place.

These people are dangerous.

I would imagine that due to Human Rights issues they will be incarcerated somewhere near where their families can visit them

I remember a 15 year old at my school printing off his mug shot from the Met Police Most Wanted site after the Zampa Road trouble and disseminating it everywhere- he was PROUD of it.

    • The problem is, I'm not sure what the going rate is for park land for festivals of this nature. I'm sure they are paying less than outfits pay for access to the big stadia - but these have better facilities and are normally better for public transport. I am also sure that Councils could press for more, and should do so, but of course there isn't really a shortage of council lands to exploit, so these entrepreneurs could go elsewhere. What I would like to know is how much of the suggested £440,000 this year for Southwark is net profit - what are their costs in getting and administering this let? If this is a gross figure then what do they actually have as 'surplus'? But at least we have a starting point now - even if it's a guess I'm thinking it's a reasonably informed one.
