The Met's budget is set by the Home Office and has been cut year on year ever since the Tories took office in 2010. Sadiq Khan has consistently protested against the government cuts and has provided ?27M from the mayoral budget this year to try to mitigate the worst effects.

The independent calls it a disputed figure

"Shoplifting, car crime and criminal damage are among the ?lower level? offences that officers may not probe as the force works to save ?400m by 2020 ? a figure disputed by the Government."

Cressida Dick has repeated this figure yesterday

"Met Commissioner Cressida Dick said yesterday that it was ?incredible to think? her force was being asked to save ?400 million over the next five years, on top of ?600 million of previous cuts. "

Fair enough, please insert "in real terms" after the second "year"! I think everyone understands that with inflation no rise is a de facto cut, don't they? Or should the Met stop complaining because they're getting more than they had in 1970?

    • Actually, if it was factory fitted then it's location would be documented. It's the fact that it can be fitted in different places which means that it's difficult for thieves to locate.
    • OK, good suggestion and it appears that the after-market price is about £260. But if that that was fitted ex-factory then the cost would be substantially less and certainly a small fraction of the price of a high-end car.
