hello all

our new son was born almost 6 weeks early and at 5lb is v small - though after reading the other premature baby thread on here tonight I realise he's doing really well. He's one week old tonight!

Does anyone have any suggestions for nappies? We've tried naturecare baby and pampers and they're leaking like crazy. I'm having to keep disturbing him to change all his clothes bless him. Each feed seems to be accompanied by a full change of clothes and moses basket sheets!

Thanks

Helen

Our baby was born weighing just over 6lb and we used Sainsbury's premature (or was it tiny baby?) nappies - can't remember the exact name but it has the weight range on the packet. They worked well until my baby started reaching the upper weight limit and they started leaking - cue to move on to the next size

Hiya, my baby boy is nearly 8lb now but is long and thin. The pampers new baby size 1's leak really badly, as do the buggies! Both look huge on him.

I bought some Boots own brand newborn nappies at the weekend which are 4lb plus and they (so far) seem to fit far better and are a lot smaller..... No leaks so far!! May be worth trying although do agree different nappies suit different babies given their different sizes and shapes.

For those who may be interested, I can honestly say 'hand on heart' that for tiny babies - twins, preemies etc. you cannot beat the Bimble nappy, which is a fleece lined cloth nappy, best used with a Motherease Waterproof Wrap over the top.

No matter what shape your baby is these will work for you and really will not leak.

With DD1 I used disposables for the first 8 weeks or so and had to change entire outfits several times a day, from the moment we went into cloth we had less than 5 leaks in the first year.

With DD2 she was in Bimbles from birth and again I'd estimate less than 5 leaks in the first 12 months - and probably ones I had were down to me forgetting to change her when I should have done.

The Bimbles happily lasted 12-14 hours at night unless she pooed, despite lots of night feeding and many, many explosive poos. Furthermore, the poo washes away easily on a quick rinse cycle and then a 60 degree wash - and - really - my set is stain free, even now after being used by at least 7 babies (so much so one friend was afraid to use them on her newborn for fear of spoiling them)!

I know disposables seem convenient, but I always think there is nothing convenient about changing entire outfits, or having to wake a baby in the night just to change their nappy, it is - quite literally a pain the bum!

For those who'd be interested I have a full set of Bimbles, plus wraps which I lend out for use on newborns, free of charge (?50 refundable desposit). They are currently with a friend, but if you have a baby due you are welcome to put your name down to give them a try.

The downside of Bimbles is that they only fit up to about 15lbs, so they are soon outgrown, and I realise this makes them something of a luxury, which is why I have kept mine to let people try cloth, and then potentially invest in a larger size, which will fit for much longer once baby has grown a bit.

Newborn leaks are so common with disposables, people seem to just expect it to be the case "one of those things that goes with having a tiny baby" but it really, really doesn't have to be that way.

It is difficult to try to share this knowledge with people without sounding like 'cloth nappy mafia', but at the same time I find it really sad to think there are so many new parents out there, struggling with leaks, going back and forth to the shops and buying all these different sizes of nappies. Did you know, with cloth nappies you can use the same set, or at most two different sizes from birth right through to potty training and be leak free all the way! Yet with disposables there are what, 7 or 8 different sizes, and you still get leaks.

Anyway, before you all decide I'm an eco warrior looney I shall leave you in peace. Little H - you know me, so hopefully you can vouch for me not being scary, or pushy at all in the flesh!

My son was 5 lbs 4 at birth and we used I think it was huggies to start off with, size 1 - actually went into 2s suprisingly quickly given his size -w e just fastened them pretty tight. Didn't try pampers till later which we now use, but perhaps huggies at that size were better for smaller babies? he was a skinny little thing and I can remember we barely had any leaks - usually was down to one of us putting the nappy on wrong in those bleary eyed early days!

hello

Buggie thanks for the offer of pampers, we're trying naturecare baby again and the midwife has suggested we seek out huggies premie nappies. If we have no success I'll let you know about the pampers offer, thanks.

molly, I can indeed confirm that you're not an eco warrier or cloth nappy obsessive , but are in fact a very nice lady who likes babies and real nappies :-) the bimbles sound amazing and after 2 full changes of clothes over night last night I'd like to know more... I was worried about the washing and drying but can it be any worse than constant laundry of babygrows and sheets!? I'll give you a shout...

    • I would love something like this..I remember the one where Gails is now..It had some bric a brac furniture and 2nd hand clothes, I don't remeber the Oyster bar. The issue with the one on Zenoria St-And I speak as a long time habitué of Portobello, Kensington Market, Alfies,Spitalfields,Covent Garden (back when it had a decent vintage market on Mondays in the 80's and Early 90's) ..Was that a lot of the stuff they sold looked a bit meh..like a bad car boot fair. I also remember when we first moved here a small indoor market on the corner of North X road and Felbrigg rd that had bric a brac and bits of furniture..That one had some good stuff. I think the secret is in having a good mix of stalls selling well curated pieces at decent prices...It would also be good to have a few tables and rails available to rent for one-off sellers (car boot style) by application. When I lived in Notting Hill I used to do Portobello under the flyover a couple of times a year and made really decent money because people tended to go there on sundays for the Casual stallholders rather the same dealers selling the same stuff.
    • Highly recommend landscape gardener Jasper Davis. Jasper designed and built me a bespoke summer house.  He also transformed my garden including natural paving/sleepers and planting. Can't recommend him enough.IMG_9568.HEIC Contact Jasper on 07966 251778

    • I don't think so, sadly. The Zenoria Street indoor market failed to take off and generally speaking traders at Christmas Fairs and Farmers Markets are reporting that it isn't worth their while now. If you go to North Cross Road, the vast majority of visitors are only buying the street food! It was the same when I went to the Horniman Sunday market and second hand market yesterday. With the lack of footfall I couldn't understand how any of the traders could be making any money.
