edhistory
This is a heavily compressed GIS generated map. If there is interest I can upload the full 15mb version to a web-site.The red spots are the official Ordnance Survey National Grid reference locations of the schools. The map can be easily modified if Southwark Council release the grid references it uses for the "main entrances".The blue circles are 400 metres radius from the official location. The circles can be easily changed when Southwark releases the information on 2011 admissions catchment areas. We will then be able to see whether there are any East Dulwich "black holes".John K Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/17401-are-there-black-holes-in-east-dulwich-primary-school-provision-map/ Share on other sites
Fuschia
I think from reports over the last few years there is definitely N issue for those around the gardens/ border of p rye park (which makes sense, having no school on one side)You need to remove the catholic schools though - afaik they never take nonCatholics Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/17401-are-there-black-holes-in-east-dulwich-primary-school-provision-map/#findComment-438196 Share on other sites
Susan
So if you are outside one of these circles you are in a school balck hole? how depressing,,thats a lot of streets and a lot of children! when will Southwark release the figures, is this something they do eventually? Sad to be thinking about this with 5 month old baby! Thanks for map, very useful Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/17401-are-there-black-holes-in-east-dulwich-primary-school-provision-map/#findComment-438218 Share on other sites
Fuschia
No SusanThat map shows notional circles around each schoolOn reality there is no fixed catchment and the circle round each school will vary year on year and between schools Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/17401-are-there-black-holes-in-east-dulwich-primary-school-provision-map/#findComment-438230 Share on other sites
edhistory
Fuschia,I believe that all the faith schools have a final distance from school admission criterion. If no child gains admission on ground of closeness to the school the catchment area will have zero radius, the blue circle will disappear from the map and only the red location spot will remain.Susan,No. The current version of the map has notional 400 metre catchment areas. When Southwark releases the 2011 admissions infomation some of the blue circles will grow and some will shrink. Then we will have an evidence base for 2011 "black holes" (or none). The map cannot be used as an accurate guide to 2012 admissions catchment areas.John K Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/17401-are-there-black-holes-in-east-dulwich-primary-school-provision-map/#findComment-438242 Share on other sites
Earl Aelfheah
This is a great piece of work. Will be really interesting to see after Southwark release 2011 info. Ruth_Baldock
So what does one do if all the schools within a 400m radius are faith schools but you are not of that faith and refuse to send your children to a school where they won't be intgrated into the curriculum fully? (prayers etc) appeal for a different school? Lump it? Fuschia
The 400m us totally random RuthOnce the 2011 distances for each school have been issued you cN see if you would have got into an ED community schoolIf not the lea will usually offer a school within 2 miles and you can stay on the waiting list for other schoolsI have yet to come across anyone over the last few years who didn't, in the end, get a school in ED or surrounding areas like forest hill, nunhead, bellenden rd, Peckham rye Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/17401-are-there-black-holes-in-east-dulwich-primary-school-provision-map/#findComment-438333 Share on other sites
samstopit
It seems that Rye Oak primary has been left out of this map? We are on the Gardens so 'black hole' territory. St Johns is our closest school, I think Rye Oak is the second closest. ed_pete
I don't want to be a wet banket but I thought that most schools so-called catchment areas are based on what Southwark regard as safe walking distance to school rather than as-the-crow-flies and therefore the map is invalid.Perfectly happy to be corrected though. kristymac1
Hi ed_pete - the measuring distance changed recently from 'safe walking distance' to 'as the crow flies' so may is a good indication. edhistory
samstoppit,Rye Oak appears on the map under its official name "Peckham Rye Primary School". ed_pete,My GIS tutor gave me a rough and ready demonstration of how network analysis software can be applied to a GIS data set to calculate a "safe route" catchment area. Here is the Bessemer Grange one. I've chosen this because because it displays the "Green Dale" problem.John K Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/17401-are-there-black-holes-in-east-dulwich-primary-school-provision-map/#findComment-438365 Share on other sites
Townleygreen
John KWhat do the colours signify on your map?All maps should have a key I was taught in geography!
