Wissant, a town near Calais, France has a campsite 5 minutes walk to the sea. It's a 2 hour drive to Dover, 35 minute on the Eurotunnel and then a 30 minute drive to Wissant. We've never stayed at this campsite, but have stayed in Wissant and the campsite is close to shops and amenities.

Southwold in Suffolk has a campsite by the sea... there is a road (very quiet) between the campsite and sand dunes though.

Wonderful, sandy, endless beach. about 3 little beach side cafes along the beach - right on the beach so you can have a tea and cake while your child digs in the sand. brilliant pier.... etc...

lots to do in Southwold and surrounding area - it's a beautiful area and very baby/child friendly in Southwold.

Doesn't take long to drive - 2 hours ish i think.

Southwold is lovely, but my in-laws who are camping professionals (every week if they can - they have a van) don't rate the site too much.

They have stayed at a site in Dunwich, just up the road from Southwold ('Cliff house' something) which they say is much better. Also by the beach - some steps to go down and its more pebbly but still lovely. And you'll feel right at home a the the village is almost called 'Dulwich'!

Thank you ladies for your recommendations.

France sounds great, what a brill idea - that trip will def. include some yummy cheese shopping!

Southwold was also highly recommended by a friend of mine recently.

We bought the tent, sleeping bag, gas BBQ and ended up booking in a site near Hastings. They have an indoor pool in case there are any rainy days. Will post about it once we are back.

    • You don’t think there are right-wing politicians fanning this with rhetoric? Really?
    • No party is willing to tackle the "elephant in the room" which is the national debt. It is costing the country circa £100 Billion ANNUALLY to service that debt. That is more than the defence and education budgets. That debt burden has to be reduced which in reality means cost cuts. That means cutting back state pensions, index-linked pensions for civil servants and others such as police, NHS etc. It means cutting back on universal credit and cutting the number of people who are claiming benefits.
