G-Plan Brandon coffee/cocktail table | walnut? tola? | ?270

For sale - a part-glazed, G-Plan / E-Gomme coffee /cocktail table.

I believe it's from the Brandon range (or perhaps evolved from it?) launched in the 1950s - it has the same style/shape. However, the wood doesn't appear to be oak, possibly it's tola or walnut which is a wood E-Gomme was using in the 1950s / early 1960s. In addition, the handles are rounded rather than sharp-angled as I've seen on Brandon oak coffee/cocktail tables.

Brandon was the very first range of furniture produced by G-Plan and because of this pieces are relatively hard to come by. The table was designed by Victor Bramwell Wilkins and was known as a cocktail table - cocktails would be placed onto the glass top before dinner.

The wood is a warm red-brown and has a beautiful grain which catches the light. The table has a classic retro 50s/60s streamlined shape and tapered legs. The drawer pulls out either side of the table and bears the gold G-Plan stamp.

The table is in excellent vintage condition. It has been cleaned and treated to a couple of coats of Danish oil. This is, however, a vintage piece and, as a result, will show some signs of age. In this case there is a little indent on a top edge of the table and also some scratching on the glass top.

It would look great in a living room to be used a coffee (or cocktail) table but equally it would sit well in a bedroom.

Also I've updated the description as, following a little bit of research and a trip to the Geoffrey Museum (where they have a little wood display!), I now think the coffee table might be walnut rather than tola. The Brandon coffee tables of the 1950s were produced in walnut so that would make sense. Either way it's a lovely warm wood with attractive grain.
