Just had to let people know about a great soft play space I discovered yesterday. It's at 89 London Road in Croydon, about 200m from West Croydon station. No exactly local but very easy to get to by train or bus from the areas around ED and perfect for a rainy day. There's a two-tier soft play zone, including a slide and ball pit, a second soft play zone for smaller children, a baby play space, books corner, sensory room, craft room and play kitchen and each two-hour session only costs ?1! All the equipment was really clean and top quality. There is also a cafe with reasonably priced kids food, cakes, tea and coffee.

One of the lovely staff members said it was at risk of closure (thanks to the Government's idiotic re-jig of Sure Start) so I'd urge anyone who is looking for this kind of space to give it a go and help its case to stay open.

More details are listed at

They do have party times set aside on weekends: 3-4.30pm or 3-5.30pm (according to brochure I took home). The weekend play sessions are 1.5 hours from 11am or 1pm and the Dads' time is 9.30-11am on Saturdays.

The phone number is 020 86498441 if you want to double check before making the trip.

Enjoy!

    • And still is, and hopefully will continue to be with changed ownership, should that happen.
    • Absolutely do not follow the advice to turn on and check the outlet yourself, but the previous part of the post above about contacting the gas authorities. Amongst other things it us illegal for those not trained and certified to interfere with gas supplies. Which you can only check (if it should be live) by breaking the law!
    • That'll be a strobe gun, and yes, it is used for ignition timing. Not so useful with modern cars because timing is done via the ECU, but you could lock yourself in your darkened garage, put on some late 80s Detroit techno - such as Derrick May's 'Strings of Life - and use the strobe light to have yourself a little rave. The above websites are close to useless for checking the service history of older cars - there's no legal requirement to have your car serviced, let alone have it recorded somewhere.
    • Call National Grid and say you have a problem with a gas pipe  0800 111 999  and with luck they will fix it for free.  Most likely my diagnosis.   Some nutter had done their own gas plumbing in my house and National Grid blanked off both a supply to an old gas fire and a wrought iron pipe in the bathroom that supplied to the old bathroom water heater originally in the house. Extremely unlikely to be connected, may be from the days of gas lighting (mainly over by the 1920s) .  Gas connection will have long since been modernised.  If it hasn't been blanked off then just turn it on and sniff, or if you are like me light it.  This is how gas fitters did it in the past,  Although at your own risk (you are more likely to asphyxiate from natural gas, it is not poisonous, and the smell is an additive, so you can smell leaks. Chances are you are old enough to have used Bunsen burners at school. The end of the video is great, the biggest source of gas is your boiler, and if you house hasn't blown up already......
