Wanted - Tax advice in relation to residential property letting

Can anyone recommend a tax expert/accountant who can give advice on tax liability in relation to residential property letting? I may have to let or sell my house later this year due to a job move and need to know what the tax situation would be. Many thanks!

There is basic info on the HMRC website if you feel like looking into this yourself. In summary if you let your house and then sell it, depending on timings you may have to pay capital gains tax on a portion of the gain relating to the let period, but there are a number of rules as to the time held etc. You would also need to give consideration to the impact of second home stamp duty if you bought elsewhere, having let your first property out.

Alternatively, any accountants locally should be able to give you basic advice on this, together with details as to the filing obligations you'd have as a landlord for tax purposes and what services they could offer around drawing up accounts /tax returns.

Providing your house has been your principal private residence throughout the whole time you have held it and up to the point you sell, there should be no tax on the sale.

    • Hi there  We live on Woodwarde Road backing on to Alleyns Top Field.  Our cat Gigi has gone missing — it’s been about 24 hours now. She is a cream Bengal. Could you please check sheds, garages, or anywhere she might have got stuck please? And if you could keep an eye out or share on any local groups/forums, we’d really appreciate it. Photo attached.   Thanks so much! My name is Jeff on 07956 910068.
    • Colin.    One for the old school.   Just saying.
    • Signed, and I will share it elsewhere, thank you for posting this. It's got nearly 70,000 signatures at present, and apparently runs till February.
    • There’s a couple of Gov petitions going on in relation to fireworks at the moment but this one is for banning them entirely except organised displays if anyone wants to sign. This is the only sensible way forward in my view. No one should be able to let them off in gardens or anywhere like that, it’s crazy. I am surprised some of you have said it hasn’t been as bad this year. I live near DKH Saino and it’s been absolutely terrible my way for days. This petition gained about 20,000 just in the last day or so so clearly the appetite is there! https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/732559
