Hello all,

I've recently become interested in renting an allotment in the local SE area inc. Peckham, Nunhead, East Dulwich, New Cross and Camberwell.

It seems that there is a lack of information online detailing how to apply for a lot.

Does anyone here have one themselves, or know how long I'd realistically have to wait for one? (I've heard rumours of it sometimes being five or six years).

And can anyone tell me the best way to start applying for one? (On-site in person, any specific contacts or local councils more generally?)

Any help at all with this would be great.

Thank you,

Andrew

Grove Allotments still has quite a short waiting list. I got mine much more quickly than I expected.

I also heard five or six years, but it depends on the site. I waited much less than two if memory serves, and then I wished I'd put my name down before.

ETA: see the thread in the link above for details.

Different allotments have different application methods, but if you Google you should get info.

I suggest you put your name on the waiting list for several near you, and see what comes up first

I can't offer you any advice on this, but my dad used to have a patch in the allotment near Dulwich Golf Club, he managed to get it after only a few months as someone had gotten too old to garden anymore and I think the bloke he spoke to there simply liked him so he jumped the queue a bit.

It was really good for him, he had his own bit of space to escape to, look after and till the land, grow stuff, have bonfires, bring us up there every now and then. Just what he needed to de-stress really.

Good luck with finding a place, I'm sure it will do you a world of good : )

    • I personally think is a great idea Bobbly and would love if there was a section for it. I wouldn't offer free gardening under the "for sale" section as I would expect something in exchange and wouldn't expect our cat being looked after for free under the "wanted" section, as an example.

    • I have fond memories of Govinda's I used to go there  back in the 90's (maybe earlier) for an affordable tasty lunch..I was wondering if its still around. Now I have to make a point of going there. Does anyone else remember a really affordable basement cafe run by the church in a street off of Golden Square? parallel to Regent Street? I also used to love the Vegetarian cafe on Neal Street in the basement (Neal Street Cafe?) and there was an inczredible inexpensive authentic Japanese resturant I use to go to with my Japanese friends (who introduced me to it) tucked away behind Long Acre where that brown brick modern building ('modern' I think it went up in the 90's!) now stands that fronts Long Acre and Neal Street..I think it was called Asakasa or something?
    • I wonder where he could be deported to, Hungary the obvious candidate in Europe, perhaps he would get on well with Modi?   Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch and Reform UK leader Nigel Farage both said Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood should look at whether Abd El Fattah's citizenship could be revoked to enable his swift removal from the UK. Farage said in a letter to Mahmood: "It should go without saying that anyone who possesses racist and anti-British views such as those of [Mr Abd El Fattah] should not be allowed into the UK." So just racists views are ok Nige?
