Kitchen extension - architect required?

Hi all,

We're looking to do a kitchen extension on our semi-detached house. We're thinking of just going out 3 metres - but not sure if you would normally get an architect to prepare drawings etc or whether its something a good builder could run with? if the former - how much would you expect to spend? I don't think that what we are looking for is particularly elaborate!

I think a lot of people would just go straight to a builder - especially if you already know exactly what you want.

Architects are not cheap, but can make a big difference if you want something a bit individual..
