Fuschia
I think that will be okIt just mostly requires themToBe strong enough toHang onto tyre swings and not stupid enough to fall off the wooden platforms Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/18433-peckham-rye-park-adventure-playground/#findComment-454975 Share on other sites
The Nappy Lady
It was closed for a disabled children only session today, and not a child in there given the weather.Seems odd to hold a separate session I thought, surely better to encourage all children to play together? Lukedaisy
No it isnt odd. Normal children take over playgrounds. Giving the disabled kids their own session enables them to be free to play on all the equipment. Also gives parents of disabled kids a place to go without being constantly stared at. The Nappy Lady
I guess so, but it also reinforces a 'them & us' mentality. Maybe it would be good to offer some mixed sessions, with limited numbers if need be. I do see your point, and was not posting because I minded the play area being closed to the general public today, I just think in general it is good for children to mix (& surely people would stare less in time if it became more normal to all be playing together?).Just a thought, and I admit to having very little experience with handicapped children so this is posted with intent to understand tye reasoning more than anything. Fuschia
Isn't it an autistic pupil session? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/18433-peckham-rye-park-adventure-playground/#findComment-455229 Share on other sites

Fuschia
I had mail conversation at some point with southwark when it was closed recently for repairs and I am sure that's what they said... Fuschia
Listed here and elsewhere as being aimed at children with autism or learning disabilities http://www.southwarkpcc.org.uk/activities.htmlPresumably there is a demand for a discrete session/possibly the Saturday opening is funded via a disability grant Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/18433-peckham-rye-park-adventure-playground/#findComment-455251 Share on other sites
Lukedaisy
Hmm not really, what the kids and parents gain from having the playground to themselves overides anything else. Some autistic children need a lot of physical space around them and may have behavioural problems. Having a non judgemental, safe, enclosed, stimulating place to go is like gold dust. Many families with disabled children rarely get the opportunity to get out for a variety of reasons. Unfortunately patience tolerance and understanding by neuro typical children and parents doesnt always happen. . and I do agree it would be good to offer some additional supervised mixed sessions with limited numbers. Southwark Council take note :) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/18433-peckham-rye-park-adventure-playground/#findComment-455253 Share on other sites
