Nigello
Does anyone know when the revamp of PR station/forecourt will begin? I hope it's tomorrow at the latest as it is truly a midden. Never mind about risking life and limb on icy pavements when there's already rotting meat or squashed fruit or hairball foot lassos in the Quatermass-like passageway to the rather lovely station building itself. KidKruger
If they posh-up the forecourt of the station then we're all doomed.Nowt wrong with a bit of 'character'. Real world stuff innits. DulwichFox
Some rough sleepers seemed to of settled in. Couple of Double mattresses with bedding in the arches. If they really posh it up, it would not be in keeping with the rest of Rye Lane. Nigello
If they really posh it up, it would not be in keeping with the rest of Rye Lane. - Talk about race to the bottom/lowest common denominator. Being grubby is not "cool" (whatever that really means; I don't know so don't use the word), despite what umpteen style columnists will tell you at the drop of a snap-back cap. If you need to get your "cool-kicks" by walking past rotted apples, urine-stained walls and homeless people, then you ought to rethink your values. I don't want "posh", just a reasonable amount of cleanliness, safety and regard for the taxpayer. Louisa
I make absolutely no secret of supporting the sentiments of the OP. I remember Rye Lane when it was clean and tidy and believe me, it had plenty of character back then. People trying to justify squalid, filthy conditions because it?s ?cool? or ?fashionable? are completely missing the point here. We don?t need gentrification in Peckham, that?s already begun without consultation anyway. But, we do need a clean and pleasant environment for visitors and locals alike. Cleaning up the station area, and offering some new station arches available for retail or cafe useage cant be a bad thing surely? Louisa. KidKruger
Only Nigella and Louisa have mentioned 'cool' so far.Perhaps the new cool means sweeping the disadvantaged out of sight, a bit of ethnic cleansing and sterilisation of Rye Lane just to make sure there's no more nasty little balls of hair ? Louisa
And so far KK only you have managed to link clean and pleasant with ethnic cleansing and sweeping the disadvantaged out of sight. What?s so wrong about wanting a sanitary and inviting environment for everyone? So places, outside of London which are MUCH poorer than Peckham would love to have this level of attention and funding, but unfortunately are overlooked. If anything, we should be grateful that funding is going in to improve the environment for people who live and work around the station. If you want to have a conversation about the evils of gentrification I?m very happy to partake, but cleaning up a filthy station forecourt for the benefit of everyone isn?t part of that in my eyes.Louisa. jimlad48
To be honest I can't wait for the work to begin - PR lane is a dump full of squalid shops selling cheap nasty tat. The sooner its replaced by something that doesnt feel like a dystopian fantasy novel the better. Apparently a bike shop will be opening underneath Co-Op house soon.Whether you like that type of regeneration or not, it has happened. Other changes too, some for the worse, when I first moved here The Hope pub was still open (now it's a bookies), there was no John The Unicorn, but there were a Currys, Woolworths and Carpetright on Rye Lane. redjam
I'm with Louisa/Nigello on this one. I can't see what's so objectionable about wanting a place to look a bit cleaner. I wouldn't want the whole character of the lane to change, but the station area is pretty squalid and intimidating late at night. You really are a charmerEthnic Cleansing? I'm sorry, I don't often feel the need to get irate, but equating urban redevelopment with the intentional identification and mass murder of one group of people by another isn't just in bad taste, it is exceptionally offensive. Similarly, my support of the democratic process to see CPZ implemented where the democratic majority of voters choose to do so has nothing to do with this thread. What an extremely offensive and unpleasant post which adds nothing to the debate, and seems intended to be as offensive as possible about the poster. I have reported you to site admin as a result. You could have said 'I'm sorry for slandering you, that was a bit of an overreaction'. Instead you've doubled down. Again, please could you delete and withdraw your above comment - I believe it is a despicable means of attacking someone by suggesting that their support for urban redevelopment equates to their supporting the mass murder of men, women and children.
