An alternative view of Hugs I posted in happier days...



I often think about what people on the forum 'really' look like. This, of course is just my imagination...


I have Huguenot as handsome, middle aged, middle class man with longish hair that is swept back put keeps falling over his eyes, which permits him the annoying habit of constantly tossing his head in an attempt to flick it back. He does this every time he reads a post that annoys him, which, is most of the time.


He's attired in expensive, casual clothes, yet, he still manages to appear slightly scruffy but given his slight eccentric tendencies, he cares little.


His dark green jumbo corduroy trousers have been faithful servants for many winters and rather uncomfortably, many summers too.


On a hot day, he allows himself the privilege of a short sleeve shirt (all buttons fastened to the top), as he strolls down to the newsagents to fetch his paper of choice, he catches a glimpse of himself in a shop window. He realises his shirt is unironed, he quickly ignores this fact as he catches glimpse of a screaming headline rant fronting one of the papers on show. Tutting his way back home, he has already penned his latest EDF post in his head.


The kettle clicks as the laptop pops open, Huguenot's huge fingers scroll down to 'East Dulwich Forum' and eventually he finds the 'start a new thread section'... the next two hours of the day are neatly taken care of.

Just as an aside, short sleeve shirts seem to be an unreasonable prioritisation of functionality over form. They may well be practical for coach drivers (beep beep beep) but should never be seen on anyone with self respect.


Conversely buttoning your shirt to the neck is an unruly habit that imposes unreasonable restrictions. Don't do it.


Unironed shirts are a bete noire. If you don't have two minutes to iron your shirt, don't bother going out.


Kettles are for pansies. I shout at my coffee to make it hot.


I do have cords, but they're too hot in Singers.

I am, of course, a complete softie. I'm not saying that to temper my opinions. I'm just a softie. That's why I generally don't get too much grief, because those that know me are aware that I'm the first person to get beneath them if they fell. I'm proud of that ;-)

He looked like a man in a suit who works in an office, when I saw him. Buzz cut and designer glasses. Not really the Hugh Grant picture you've painted there, I'm afraid, Atticus.


Quite handsome and pleasant too, so I think his computer has some kind of transformative effect on him, much like the mask in the film of the same name :)

Back to the original question.


No, I don't think it should be extended. It would just become some thing going on un the background, which people started ignoring. Big weekend, then put it away til next year.


I do think the policing bill is insane though, especially at a time of cuts to services.

      The current wave of xenophobia is due to powerful/influential people stirring up hatred.  It;'s what happened in the past, think 1930s Germany.  It seems to be even easier now as so many get their information from social media, whether it is right or wrong.  The media seeking so called balance will bring some nutter on, they don't then bring a nutter on to counteract that. They now seem to turn to Reform at the first opportunity. So your life is 'shite', let;s blame someone else.  Whilst sounding a bit like a Tory, taking some ownership/personal responsibility would be a start.  There are some situations where that may be more challenging, in deindustrialised 'left behind' wasteland we can't all get on our bikes and find work.  But I loathe how it is now popular to blame those of us from relatively modest backgrounds, like me, who did see education and knowledge as a way to self improve. Now we are seen by some as smug liberals......

      Kwik Fit buggered up an A/C leak diagnosis for me (saying there wasn't one, when there was) and sold a regas. The vehicle had to be taken to an A/C specialist for condensor replacement and a further regas. Not impressed.

      Yes, these are all good points. I agree with you, that division has led us down dangerous paths in the past. And I deplore any kind of racism (as I think you probably know).  But I feel that a lot of the current wave of xenophobia we're witnessing is actually more about a general malaise and discontent. I know non-white people around here who are surprisingly vocal about immigrants - legal or otherwise. I think this feeling transcends skin colour for a lot of people and isn't as simple as, say, the Jew hatred of the 1930s or the Irish and Black racism that we saw laterally. I think people feel ignored and looked down upon.  What you don't realise, Sephiroth, is that I actually agree with a lot of what you're saying. I just think that looking down on people because of their voting history and opinions is self-defeating. And that's where Labour's getting it wrong and Reform is reaping the rewards.

      @Sephiroth you made some interesting points on the economy, on the Lammy thread. Thought it worth broadening the discussion. Reeves (irrespective of her financial competence) clearly was too downbeat on things when Labour came into power. But could there have been more honesty on the liklihood of taxes going up (which they have done, and will do in any case due to the freezing of personal allowances).  It may have been a silly commitment not to do this, but were you damned if you do and damned if you don't?
