We need to book car hire from Malaga airport for later this month - it's always takes ages trying to work out what added extras will be applied at the airport etc and wondered if anyone can recommend a good firm that avoids all these. We found Cicar was great for the Canaries (no hidden extras, gets great reviews) but not sure if they operate in the same way in mainland Spain.

thanks

DONT GO GOLDCAR NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO Looked much cheaper than other car hire companies in the arrivals hall but.....

We went with Autoclick the next time (Xmas before last) arranged through Economy Car Rentals. Off airport - ten minute walk or a free mini bus. There are a cluster of rental places just down the airport road. I was worried about any damage that may already be on the car - it was in-doors and really difficult to get a good look.

But all great - not the hour wait with Goldcar nor the silly fuel policy where you pay for a tank whether you use it or not. Here's some more

Yep, avoid Goldcar like the plague: a complete bunch of fraudsters - and I do not use the term lightly. Refused to accept my third-party excess insurance and made me pay out a huge amount at the airport for what should be optional insurance anyway. No insurance, no car. Great heap of people at the airport that day going through exactly the same as me. They are nearly always the 'cheapest' on comparison sites, but turn out to be wildly expensive.

Apparently Firefly aren't much better. either.

I now always use Avis via BA exec club - cheap, plus you get an extra driver thrown in for free. And no hassles at the airport. They once even very nicely changed my fuel option from 'return full' to 'return empty' when I couldn't find anywhere open on a Sunday. They could have charged me a quite hefty refuelling bill.

Oh, the other Goldcar trick is to have you sign on a electronic pad to 'approve your credit card transaction', then print that signature all over the agreement wherever they want.

I'd be interested to know what the legal validity of a printed signature is.

PS Car companies don't like debit cards, as it is harder to just chuck on extra charges after the event if there is no money in the account.

Most hire car companies have taken debit cards. Did some research yonks ago when it appeared kosher. But two didn't and I got stung, hence I have a Barclaycard that is only used to hire cars, about three or four times in a dozen car hires over the last few years. I have to try to remember the pin! Search Goldcar Guardian and there are loads more reports of dodgy dealings.

we recently used this company: http://www.economycarrentals.com/

we were met in the terminal by a rep from Europcar who then drove us to a location around 5-10mins from the airport (hence the reason it was cheaper I guess as you don't have the convenience of the car being actually in the terminal)

All ran very smoothly and I think it was around half the price of what we would have paid - worked out less than ?10 per day.

The earlier you book, the better rate you'll get. good luck!

Try Zest, i have started using them for all my business trips they are uk based and their additional insurance costs etc are a lot lower than elsewhere. if you drop me a PM I can send you a referral code and you can get some additional loyalty points

All hire companies in Spain do have extras applied, some are transparent and reasonable, they will try and sell add-ons you'll get the option for the wheel, windscreen and underside protection, worth the extra and it means you are completely covered.

I use this company, 5 mins from the airport and they will collect and drop off at the airport. Very good prices friendly people.

    • Sue My point being that if you experience something that could potentially be sorted by a GP, you might feel it necessary to go to A&E, which would be clogged up due to the doctors strike.  Just my opinion, but I don't really see that its necessary to close a surgery for half a day for staff training.
    • A huge shout-out to Andy! He’s helped us several times now and is an absolute gem. He doesn't just do the easy jobs; he finds solutions to the difficult, non-obvious problems that others might miss. He is very hard working, incredibly friendly, great with pets, and always leaves the place better than he found it. 10/10!
    • Here to add my voice to those praising Temi. She just painted my dilapidated home office in ED and did a fantastic job in just two days in a much lighter colour, including woodwork, damp blocker and filling holes. She's efficient, on time and I barely heard a peep out of her; she just got on with the job. I recommend her wholeheartedly.
