My 3 week old is weighing in at a whopping 5 kilos. He's not particularly chunky but is long and looks like he's going to be tall like his brother (but strangely not like his father or myself)!

My problem is that our newborn is already looking pretty squashed in our P&T's cocoon. I can't actually see him fitting in it at all in a matter of weeks. Of course, he wont be ready for sitting upright in the doubles kit for some time and can't recline in the top seat as there won't be any head room for my 19 month old who still very much needs the buggy.

I'm sure we're not the only ones that have had this problem. Can anyone explain how they got through the interim bit before safely moving to the doubles set up with a huge newborn please.

Thanks in advance?

This seems a really common problem - even with babies that are not that huge! We got through it by squeezing youngest into the cocoon for as long as we possibly could (didn't help that he would kick his way up it anyway) then we just lined the lie flat bit with a lambskin and lay him directly onto that (no cocoon) - but this feels a bit odd and it's quite hard to get them in and out. We finally put him in the doubles seat at 4m (one of the ones that reclines ever so slightly) with a seat liner and head hugger.

Basically - not ideal buggy in many ways!!

I gave up on the P+T for this reason. My big but not massive baby hated it. By about 6 weeks she seemed to get really cross that she couldn't bend her legs up or wriggle around if the toddler was in. Also seemed to get really hot in there.

I have a friend who is using hers in newborn-toddler mode but without the cocoon. Have you tried this?

  • 4 months later...

I'm going to be facing the same problem very soon. Baby boy is big- around 12lb at 6 wks. He's already looking a bit squashed especially in all his winter gear. Just wondering if it would work to use the buggy in newborn/toddler mode without the cocoon in the winter? Would baby warm enough? And do you use the straps? Otherwise can't see what's stopping baby flying out! Anyone used p&t like this successfully? Also wondering (it's been a long sleepless night!) is there any reason not to have baby in the main top seat, toddler in the bottom? Then toddler can get out and walk when baby wants to sleep. Should mention that although my eldest is nearly 3 she doesn't weigh much more than 10.5kg. Or (last question!) do babies sleep ok in the bottom seat?

Many thanks expert p&t owners!

You'd think they'd make it a bit longer. My daughter is 4 months now, and actually quite a squat baby, but even she seemed to have no growing room.

She did love her cacoon, and I can still use it to get her to sleep, but we've never really had any joy using it as it was meant to be used.

Toddler in buggy, baby in sling us the only way we've been able to manage, but hard work for Mrs Otta.

We gave up with the cocoon at about 14 weeks and padded the newborn area with a lambskin rug (note rug not seat liner - so it came up the sides/back etc. Didn't strap in as if you look the straps are too low and their little legs would be squashed!! If you have a cosy snowsuit might work? Quite hard getting them in and out - you kind of have to post them! We put baby in the seat at about 18 weeks I think. Sleep was not good after that!
We have a seat that reclines sligtly (for the hammerhead and bought from snowboarder ;) ) and Lex is in that with her padded snow suit. Works really well, she snoozes off in it and stays asleep for aged. Would definitely recomment. Shes 4.5mo, weighs 20lbs (oy) and outgrew the cocoon at about 8/9w. We had a horrid month of her in the maclaren reclined and seb jumping off his buggy board and screaming to be carried. Big sigh

    • I'm guessing they're busy. I found out just now that the SNT has tracked down the kids who attacked my dog, had strong words with their parents, and the gang has now broken up. I got a lot of detail, which I won't go into here, but it sounds as if they were also quite compassionate towards some of the kids, who came from less than optimal backgrounds, shall we say.  I know that those kids had nothing to do with the attack of the man in August and that they are also aware of the fireworks problem. Sounds like good community policing.
    • I'd rather go to actual local Safer Neighbourhood Team meetings and see the whites of their eyes.  Ours in Peckham Rye Park ward (maps of areas the ward covers are on the police website; no idea about the new one!) used to be very well attended, but sadly now not so.  The local police of the SNT seem to change far too regularly so they never have a chance to really know the area and the people.  And the last meeting, held at the Tenants Hall of Brenchley Gardens (so right on the edge of the geographical area), was held with one day's notice.  Not good.
    • Friends of Peckham Rye Park sent emails to its members (do join if you can; it's useful) saying a few nights ago a fire was started on the SE22 side of the park by kids with fireworks.  Horrific.
