My son will be starting at Bright Horizons Dulwich Nursery in September when he'll be 2.5.

I was wondering whether there are any others in the same boat, or anyone whose child already goes there and is a similar age who might be willing to meet up now and then for playdates so he/they don't feel too lost when he/they start/s!

Hello Polly D

Has your son started nursery yet and is he enjoying it? I am starting to look at nurseries for my daughter. I am only due end December but I hear there are long waiting lists. I have to say that we are a bit put off with the building of Bright Horizons on the Sainsbury car park but they seem to have good reviews and an outstanding Offsted report. His you son happy there and would you recommend this nursery? Many thanks for your comments. Loren

Don't be put off by the exterior of a nursery. My daughter's nursery is also in a car park and not too aesthetically pleasing from the outside ie a modern block. However as it is purpose built rather than a conversion all of the rooms are really spacious with large food prep and changing areas. It's also really convenient having parking outside to do drop offs - rather than finding a space on a busy street.

Hi Loren

He loves it! We're all so happy with it. I would put your daughter down on the list for sure. I don't know if you can do it until the baby is born but yes, the waiting list is long so do it ASAP.

The staff are just lovely: so considerate, friendly and involved. I really feel like they're making a difference to his development, in a good way. He's still a little shy and clingy at drop off but if his favourite helpers are there, he's okay, and they all seem to want to help him to be happy. And then when I pick him up he's always charging around having a great time.

He's always bringing home paintings or things he's made, he's learned loads of new songs which he's taught us! The cook is lovely and they always have good food 3 times/day plus snacks.

We couldn't be happier with this nursery. Great toys, imaginative activities, lots of good outdoor space, and yes I agree it feels a little odd that the building is in the car park but once you're inside, or even in the garden, you really have no idea. Plus it's handy for picking up supper on the way home!

Do PM me if you'd like to know more. Good luck!

P

Only thing to add that is currently a bit annoying: you can't park there all day. Bright Horizons is in discussion with Sainsbury's over this but for now you have to park elsewhere. We're going on the bus at the mo which is sometimes a struggle with the buggy at 8am but that's about the only negative thing I could say about it!

    • These have reduced over the years, are "perfect" lives Round Robins being replaced by "perfect" lives Instagram posts where we see all year round how people portray their perfect lives ?    The point of this thread is that for the last few years, due to issues at the mail offices, we had delays to post over Christmas. Not really been flagged as an issue this year but I am still betting on the odd card, posted well before Christmas, arriving late January.
    • Two subjects here.  Xmas cards,  We receive and send less of them.  One reason is that the cost of postage - although interestingly not as much as I thought say compared to 10 years ago (a little more than inflation).  Fun fact when inflation was double digits in the 70s cost of postage almost doubled in one year.  Postage is not a good indication of general inflation fluctuating a fair bit.  The huge rise in international postage that for a 20g Christmas card to Europe (no longer a 20g price, now have to do up to 100g), or a cheapskate 10g card to the 'States (again have to go up to the 100g price) , both around a quid in 2015, and now has more than doubled in real terms.  Cards exchanged with the US last year were arriving in the New Year.  Funnily enough they came much quicker this year.  So all my cards abroad were by email this year. The other reason we send less cards is that it was once a good opportunity to keep in touch with news.  I still personalise many cards with a news and for some a letter, and am a bit grumpy when I get a single line back,  Or worse a round robin about their perfect lives and families.  But most of us now communicate I expect primarily by WhatApp, email, FB etc.  No need for lightweight airmail envelope and paper in one.    The other subject is the mail as a whole. Privitisation appears to have done it no favours and the opening up of competition with restrictions on competing for parcel post with the new entrants.  Clearly unless you do special delivery there is a good chance that first class will not be delivered in a day as was expected in the past.   Should we have kept a public owned service subsidised by the tax payer?  You could also question how much lead on innovation was lost following the hiving off of the national telecommunications and mail network.
    • Why have I got a feeling there was also a connection with the beehive in Brixton on that road next to the gym
    • Ah, thanks,  it all comes flooding back. I've actually been to the Hastings shop, I'd forgotten all about it, along with her name! Didn't she (in between?)  take over what  was then The Magnolia, previously The Magdala, now The Lordship, with her then partner? Or is that some figment of my imagination?  In fact, didn't they transform it from The Magdala (much missed) to The Magnolia? With flowery wallpaper covering the front of the bar? Which reminds me of the pub's brief period after The Magnolia  as the ill-conceived and ill-fated The Patch.
