Damian, I agree with the large majority of what you saying. You just have to look at how the Turkish community in Dalton stood their ground.

There is a difference in how we perceive ourselves and how others perceive us. I read in one of the other threads about somebody that gone done over on Forest Hill Road and somebody responded that you shouldn't flash a nice mobile around. Found that odd that the advice is that a law-abiding citizen should hide away so that they do not tempt the thugs to indulge in a rob. I guess that's why they get away with it, because we shriek away whenever they push and threaten us.

Confidence and respect it's what it's all about. They have the confidence push us. Do we have the confidence to stand up to them?

I'm sure there are many models of 'civilian policing' which have been tried and tested which we could refer to for tips / guidance.

Let's look at those. One was someone drivng a car into three people. Could happen in a road accident.

The brain damaged guy went up to a bunch of youths lighting a bin on his own - not smart.

I meanif you want something guaranteed risk free, no-one can give you that. The risk of no action is that people's properties could be burn down with people inside.

The car was driven into them deliberately. As I said earlier, things don't necessarily play out in the way you might like to imagine.

Dh is a sensible guy and means well. I was out with another friend the other night looking out and helping if needed. Doing nothing is not an option. Setting up a lookout network is another good idea.

Wow. I didn't realise before reading this thread that the people of East Dulwich were so very clear about who does and doesn't 'belong' here.'Hoodies' in 'their' neighbourhoods and middle class, pesumably white, people in ED?

Now that those responsible for the rioting and looting have crawled back under their rocks, my concern after reading and listening to views like the ones expressed on this forum, is that the hundreds of ordinary, decent,law abiding youngsters who had nothing to do with rioting or looting and never would, but are out and about with mates during the summer holidays will be targetted with violence by puffed up vigilantes and opportunistic racists.

I believe that had East Dulwich suffered more damage than Peckham instead of the other way around then many people would have travelled here from Peckham to help with the tidy up afterwards!

hear hear Buccaneer! The clear up shows community spirit, and part of community is helping those in need. The rioters haven't broken that community spirit, and this shows them and hopefully shames them into seeing that the people in the clear up are the better people, happier and likely to have a better life in the long term for it.

My 15 year old son has a new rather fetching red hoodie, please don't pick on him if you see him, he's about as harmless as you can get

one of the reasons why the initial policing effort was so inefficient in the outset was due to the fact that the rioters were able to drift back into onlooking crowds because they looked like everyone else...

Back to the original post.For many has, frankly,been a crap week - but not least for all of our local shops and businesses - so let's all take the opportunity to visit them this weekend, try and spend a few quid - or at least offer a few words of support. Here's hoping for an end to the madness!
