When to the Arsenal yesterday evening, good result for us even if we did, as usual, make hard work of it!! If ever a player made me eat my words it's Carl Jenkinson. I can't believe how much this lad has improved. I put it down to the legend Steve Bould. Cazorla was different class as usual, and his quick footwork was joy to behold. I hear City were ripped to shreds for most of the game and were awarded a fortuitous penalty to give then a share of the spoils. Still, if that happened to my club, I don't think I'd complain.

Nice to see my predictions for last week were pretty decent as well.

Man City 3 Sunderland 0

Chelsea 2 Norwich 0

Swansea 2 Reading 1

West Brom 2 QPR 2

Wigan 1 Everton 2

West Ham 2 Arsenal 2 (last minute equaliser from Carroll, Wenger will claim he fouled someone in the box. You heard it here first)

Southampton 3 Fulham 1

Liverpool 1 Stoke 1 (Hope I'm wrong and the pool start to climb the table, but record against Stoke is not good)

Tottenham 2 Aston Villa 1

Newcastle 2 Man Utd 2 (Man U equal;iser in the 19th minute of stoppage time)

First week 5 pts, second week 6 pts... time for the OCD version...

Man City 3 - 1 Sun'land

Chelsea 4 - 0 Norwich

Swansea 2 - 1 Reading

WBA 2 - 0 QPR

Wigan A 1 - 3 Everton

West Ham 2 - 1 L'Arsenal

So'ton 1 - 2 Fulham

L'pool 3 - 1 Stoke

Tottenham 2 - 1 Aston Villa

New'stle 3 - 1 Man Utd

The Arsenal and Allardyce have history. He detests Johnny Foreigner and blames the for all the shorcomings of the English game. That and his footballing philosophy are about as welcome as turd in a swimming pool to us Gooners.

There's a fair few foreigners in his current squad. Plus the goalkeeper not listed above.

He may have foreign players in his side but not by choice probably. He has not been shy is voicing his opinion about the problems foreign players have brought to English football. During his spell at Bolton his tactics and style were anathema to myself and many others. In short, he's a tool.

    • But all those examples sell a wide variety of things,  and mostly they are well spread out along Lordship Lane. These two shops both sell one very specific thing, albeit in different flavours, and are just across the road from each other. I don't think you can compare the distribution of shops in Roman times to the distribution of shops in Lordship Lane in the twenty first century. Well, you can, but it doesn't feel very appropriate. Haa anybody asked the first shop how they feel? Are they happy about the "healthy competition" ?
    • ED is included in the 17 August closure set (or just possibly 15 August, depending on which part of the page you trust more) listed at https://metro.co.uk/2025/07/25/full-list-25-poundland-stores-confirmed-close-august-23753048/. Here incidentally are some snippets from their annual reports, at https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/02495645/filing-history. 2022: " during the period we opened 41 stores and closed 43 loss-making/under-performing stores.  At the period-end we were trading from 821 stores in the UK, IoM and ROI. ... "We renogotiated 82 leases in the year, saving on average 45% versus the prior lease agreement..." 2023: "We also continued to improve our market footprint through sourcing better store locations, opening 53 and closing 51 stores during the year." 2024:  "The ex-Wilco stores acquired in the prior year have formed a core part of this strategy to expand our store network.  We favour quality over quantity and during the period we opened 84 stores and closed 71 loss-making/under-performing ones."
    • Ha! After I posted this, I thought of lots more examples. Screwfix and the hardware store? Mrs Robinson and Jumping Bean? Chemists, plant shops, hairdressers...  the list goes on... it's good to have healthy competition  Ooooh! Two cheese shops
