'Steel and Glass' by Trevor Christie at Diverse, Brixton

Recommended Posts

Stumbled across a remarkable exhibition of street photography yesterday by Herne Hill resident and photographer, Trevor Christie. Sadly, there are just two days left for this show - it ends Saturday night, September 3rd, at 10pm. But the good news is that you still have time to catch it. Well worth doing so. Something like 300 B&W and colour prints covering 4 walls at Diverse Gallery which is located at 62 Atlantic Road. What's really nice is that this is traditional photography not digital. 35mm film stock and hand done prints. The exhibition is titled 'Steel and Glass' as these represent the main components of the traditional camera. There's a broad range of subject matter but most of it is urban portraiture which portrays lean, stark and confused times but does so with a sense of wonder. This magically transforms gritty into beauty and lends it a timelessness. Shadows, ghosting and blurring blend reportage with impression - some photos are reminiscent of 40s and 50s urban realism but are layered with an ethereal quality due to imperfection only tactile photography and its processing can bring.

You can see many of the works on show on his Flickr web pages and these include print titles as well as notes ( trevor.christie) but you'd do so much better seeing these in person to fully appreciate them. Digital doesn't do them justice. Was told the exhibition is open today from 11am-7pm and closes tomorrow at 10pm.

This is news but I guess it is also a review. So I'd better rate it. OK then, 5 stars out of 5. See you down Atlantic Rd.

No, not the same T Christie!

for any of you interested in the trevor christie show - just had an email from trevor to say that the diverse gallery show has been extended till the 10th, and he also says that he has a CONFIRMED later closing of 10pm. regarding a showing in CP which you mention sylvester, that sounds like a good thing and perhaps if you have any venue ideas you could contact trevor on [email protected]

    • I hate the idea of someone with a genuine disability losing money, it's heart-breaking. I thought the whole idea of these cuts was to get kids with mental health issues, which we used to call 'the human condition', off benefits and into a job. Before anyone says anything, I'm not talking about people with severe autism.  If the tests are so astringent, Spartacus, how come healthy youngsters with anxiety are getting benefits? It's ludicrous.  This from The Times:  Then there is mental health. This is the fastest-growing category of claim; anxiety and depression is now the single biggest reason to claim PIPs, accounting for 16 per cent of spending. Including problems such as autism and ADHD, there are 1.4 million people claiming for “psychiatric disorders”, almost 40 per cent of the total.   NHS figures on Thursday found that 23 per cent of people of working age now have a mental disorder, up from 18 per cent a decade ago, rising to 26 per cent in 16 to 24 year-olds. Young people are most likely to claim benefits for mental health problems and there is growing concern about a generation who may do so for decades. The number of children on disability living allowance, the precursor to PIPs, will reach a million by the end of the decade, double pre-Covid levels. Most of these are for behavioural problems such as ADHD or learning disabilities
