Any suggestions for a nice plant / srub in front garden?

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

Just wondering if any green fingered ED forum people out there have any tips for a good 'focal' plant or srub for our front garden? We were hoping to buy a lavender bush, but being no garden expert I hadn't realised they don't grow very tall. We are wanting something that not only provides some greenary but also gives a little bit of privacy in our front room - without blocking out too much light. we are ideally looking for a nice central plant, so were thinking of now having the lavender to go along the picket fence and may be some sort of small tree or plant.

Any suggestions please send them through!

Many thanks all,

annie

Whilst not being able to recommend to you a specific plant, I can recommend without any payment or benefit to myself that you go see Paul at Indacos flowers up Lordship Lane, by Lordship Lane vets and that strip of shops at junction of the South Circular. He is very good and his plants are good quality and very reasonable costs.
Whatever you decide to go for, if the plant is to provide some privacy screening, it needs to be an evergreen so you don't end up looking at a bunch of bare twigs during the dormant months. To help narrow things down, you need to determine what the light and soil conditions are so you can choose a suitable plant for the position you want it to grow in. You might also want to consider whether you want flowers/scent, and/or autumnal interest such as berries. Also, pay attention to its predicted maximum height/spread, and rate of growth.

    • Second time Aria has completed a plumbing job for me and both times he’s been polite. Communicative, kept to time and completed the job. He’s very helpful and tidy as well. First job was ball valve in water tank, not easy at all. He and his team were fantastic. This time kitchen tap cylinders replaced and tap tightened.  Much appreciated, Aria thank you.
    • Thought others may be interested to help a local community centre help others.    My bank account offers roundup and it’s been growing all year. As well as treating myself or putting it towards a train ticket to see my family I’ve made a donation to the Albrighton. They can use donations at any time but I hope my donation will go towards the Christmas hampers.    Can you support them so they can provide Christmas hampers?   https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/albrightoncommunityfridge?utm_id=1&utm_term=M22JKQb6W   A donation of £50 will pay for a hamper to feed a family over this Christmas period. A donation of £30 will pay for a hamper to feed someone living on their own over the Christmas period.
    • I've never got Christmas pudding. The only times I've managed to make it vaguely acceptable to people is thus: Buy a really tiny one when it's remaindered in Tesco's. They confound carbon dating, so the yellow labelled stuff at 75% off on Boxing Day will keep you going for years. Chop it up and soak it in Stones Ginger Wine and left over Scotch. Mix it in with a decent vanilla ice cream. It's like a festive Rum 'n' Raisin. Or: Stick a couple in a demijohn of Aldi vodka and serve it to guests, accompanied by 'The Party's Over' by Johnny Mathis when people simply won't leave your flat.
    • Not miserable at all! I feel the same and also want to complain to the council but not sure who or where best to aim it at? I have flagged it with our local MP and one Southwark councillor previously but only verbally when discussing other things and didn’t get anywhere other than them agreeing it was very frustrating etc. but would love to do something on paper. I think they’ve been pretty much every night for the last couple of weeks and my cat is hating it! As am I !
