Green Dulwich turns Blue

Sue I was under the impression that they just need to put it back into your boundary. I just looked it up and it says this on southwark website: "collectors will put your bin back within the boundary of your property after emptying it". I often come home and have to wrestle with the bins to get back in but doesn't take long.

I think that's fair enough as they really do it quickly - not an easy job.

I am not that bothered about where they leave my bin, but without fail they do seem to dump my blue box onto my plants....was wondering this very morning how I could prevent them fron doing this!

So if it s the boundary of your property where bin men should replace the bin then there should not be all those bins on the pavement, on Marmora Road there are plenty of gardens or garden paths to put bins, although people do put their bins onto the pavement to make sure they are emptied, it's a problem.............................

Spent the day in the garden yesterday, amassing huge amounts of out-of-control climbing stuff cut down.

Changed, washed twigs and dead leaves from hair, went to library to get brown bags for said huge amounts of stuff.

Library had "run out" of garden bags.

If I had a bonfire in my tiny garden it would probably burn my house down, not to mention all my plants, so now I have a massive pile of stuff I can't immediately dispose of (only a tiny part of it will fit into my green garden bag).

How can they run out of bags? Why didn't someone notice that they didn't have many left, and order more before they ran out?

Autumn (and to a lesser extent Spring) is surely the time of year when these bags are in highest demand?

I've not heard of any plans for 'chipping' Southwarks wheelie bins. When I raised this with council officers last year lots of sniggers with clear implication they thought I was kidding.

BUT Windsor & Eton council has done this and they offer rewards to those households that are doing really well recycling. I like the idea of carrots rather than sticks. But get the paranoia that such 'chipping' could be used for sticks approach.

I'd hope fining people wont happen. Most people leave bins on the pavements as they don't have anywhere else to put them or physically can't move them around. When full wheelie bins can be really heavy.

As an experiment I've asked if the Vale residents association could consider applying for Cleaner, GReener, Safer funding to trial helping households to create wheelie bins spaces on Derwent Grove. Hopefully, they like the idea, will apply, be successful.

This week our rubbish and our kitchen waste was collected but not our bottles, cans or paper. So now it's well over two weeks since the last collection. Is there a strike?

Surely it's kitchen/ garden waste every week and non-recyclable rubbish one week, recyclable waste the next. So, it's the brown bin every week, and EITHER Green OR Blue taken with it, on a fortnightly rotation. What you describe, Huggers, (brown and green bin taken) seems right, unless you've had two weeks running brown and green. I would assume that this coming week you'd have brown and blue taken, and the green ignored.

Huggers, it's always on the same day (or should be).

But one week it's brown and green bin, the following week brown and blue bin. However, the bins are not necessarily collected at the same time, though in theory on the same day.

So brown bin every week, green and blue bins alternate weeks.

ETA: You should have received a booklet from the council explaining the new system. It had a timetable saying what would be collected when on the back page.

Can I urge everyone who feels these bins are indefensible in every way(most people have stated all the obvious objections)please phone or email the council to remove the bins that you don't need and swap them for boxes, or share with neighbours. We're doing that, and using the 3 large recycling bins parked outside the flats at the end of our road.

Thanks James, I'm delighted to say my small green bin has now arrived, and I collected a batch of brown bags from the library on Saturday :)

Finding it hard to fit all my "blue" recycling even into two boxes, as it's now only collected fortnightly, so will investigate sharing with a neighbour for the rest of it, as no way on earth am I having a monstrous bright blue wheelie bin outside my house :))

Ive had blue one removed and have two boxes and a bag for paper. Still awaiting slim green bin. But it looks much better.

I'm loving the new system; don't give a damn what colour the bin is; and would like to pass congratulations to the Council for improving the waste collection system at a time of cutbacks. I'm loving not having to put bins out twice a week; loving being able to recycle food waste including non-compostables like meat and cooked food; and loving that I only have to worry once a week instead of twice a week about advertising I'm not at home because of the bins dumped on the footpath to my front door).

I am not loving, however, the decision to cancel the fireworks in Dulwich Park (which is why I've registered for this forum).

Its been reported and hopefully I will get a new one soon.
