Update on this post - we've found places to stay so now looking for car hire recommendations. Has anyone hired a car in Sardinia? We've been ripped off when hiring in mainland Italy in the past so are looking for a reputable firm without all the hidden extras...

We're staying in 2 different places right by the sea on the NorthEast coast but plan to travel around the northern half of the island so any suggestions of the best places to visit inland as well as on the coast would be great.

We went to Corsica in an Oct a few years ago and it was definitely winding down for the winter. Restaurants were not offering full menus and it was basically what they had left in the kitchens. The outdoor non-heated swimming pool was freezing and too cold to swim in but we did brave the sea and think it was warmer. There were still plenty of tourists and the days were pleasantly warm but did need long sleeves / warmer tops in the eve. Loved it have always wanted to go back to that part of the world and Sardinia.

thanks, Mrs TP

As Southern Sardinia is a fair bit further down, we're hoping it will be that much warmer....??

A friend who knows people living there has been has just said

re Sardinia -

So my friend says that the warm seas at that time of year are "without a doubt, Villasimius ( a beautiful very popular ?place during the summer months ) Chia and all the Cagliari area, including Portopino, Teulada, Tuerredda etc October is definitely not holiday month so I should not think there are many people around. As it's the beginning of autumn the wind could be cold rather than warm, but it should be ok once you're in! Fabulous unspoilt white and golden sand beaches.

We went to Sardinia early September last year, specifically to Chia and it was warm (27/28 degrees) but I found it too windy and cold for the sea, so October will most definitely be too cold. The pools weren't heated either so I hardly went swimming at all. Our son didn't want to get into the sea/pool because it was freezing! But the beaches are gorgeous and can be compared to Caribbean beaches as the sand is very fine.

thanks for the message, caterpillar78 - I see that Chia is in the south so guess that places further north would be even colder for swimming, if there is still a wind...

Maybe the winds aren't always so strong- has anyone else been at that time of year?

Do not under any circumstances go with Goldcar (Eurocar), they fleeced me for ?600 on return to the UK for 'damage' - using stock photos of areas of the car which unfortunately (for me) I hadn't captured in my photographs of a pristine undamaged car. Absolute thieves.

I would advise you to take out insurance to cover your excess (?1400 excess these days), my insurance cost me ?28 and covered me for the ?600 Goldcar stole...

    • Thanks all, our hope was (despite the diminishing estate) he would get on with it.  Progress is glacial, it's been two years since probate was granted, that's two cold and damp winters with no heating, and not surprisingly a pipe burst. He's blames the issues on the estate agent, who separately had a dispute with him, he had a wobbly when one of the beneficiaries spoke to the estate agent.  Separately he said it was the family's fault for letting the property get into a poor condition.  It was dated, but certainly not in poor condition. There are two five star reviews on Google, and five one star: ** WARNING** This solicitor firm has to be one of the worst I have encountered. The solicitor is prehistoric in his practices and will carry out work at his own snails pace, the fax machine he uses gets turned off at 2 pm and its near impossible to get him on the phone. STAY AWAY, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED, check the solicitors ombudsman, this firm has previous bad practice recorded.   Disgusting under no circumstances use this solicitor. For over 10 years he has not carried out the terms of a Will he has not re-invested money but has retained it.  He writes letters which are pure "Flannel" excuses for doing nothing.  You have been warned   shocking experience, delayed the whole process, told other side solicitors to not contact him as he feels pressured etc. never use.   Not fit for 21st century. No website, no email address, no electronic transfer. Very slow, very little communication.   Was not a pleasant experience dealing with this firm
