Greetings,

Our next book is "The Secret Scripture" by Sebastian Barry.

https://www.theguardian.com/books/2008/may/24/fiction1

Our next meeting is Wednesday 20th September in the Clockhouse at 8.00pm.

I thought our last book The Elegance of Hedgehogs was totally un-gripping but the end was excellent and quite sad so if you're still reading carry on it's worth it.

Till then,

Dear book group,

For October I want to set the date as 25th October. I am going to suggest "My Dear I Wanted to Tell You" by Louisa Young as our book that month.

I am hoping to invite Louisa to that meeting to discuss her book and her writing in general, but this I will have to confirm.

So we can discuss this in September.

Don't forget Rye Books, if we order three copies of the book group book we get a discount, but it's always good to support your local book shop.

Till next time,

Author Louisa Young has agreed to come to our 25th October meeting to discuss her book ?My Dear I Wanted to Tell You?

The author Louisa Young is coming to our meeting so a good turn out would be spiffing! Can you let me know if you are able to come.

I am finding it a great read and almost finished.

Till then,

Dear book group,

Many thanks to everyone who came to our last meeting with author Louisa Young. It was a very good meeting, a lot of area?s covered from the war to surgery, homosexuality and the class system prevalent at the time. Louisa was interesting and well informed. Commiserations to those of you who wanted to come but couldn?t.

Our next meeting is on the 22nd November in the Clockhouse. Our next book is The Power by Naomi Alderman.

We can discuss our end of year meal. I look forward to seeing you.

Till then,

Oops,

Sorry I forgot to say a big thanks to Sheila for bringing her bits & pieces from the war, that really was the icing on the cake of a brilliant meeting.

Perhaps you could send me some feed back which I will pass on to Louisa.

All the best and hope to see you all in November.

Till then,

Chick.

PS Teresa I hope Helen enjoyed it, I was a bit worried she didn't hear too well.

Some feed back:

Lovely evening.

It was so nice of Louisa to take the time to spend an evening with us. Interesting to hear how Louisa did the research for the book. And there were some poignant stories from Louisa and others about how their families were affected by the First World War.

Some feed back from last week.

I really enjoyed Wednesday. It was a treat to be able to discuss a book with its author and the first time I have ever done so. Louisa was very open and friendly. I was interested to hear how she was drawn to write ? My Dear I wanted to tell you ? after learning about Dr Gillies work with facial reconstruction. And I liked our lively group discussion with Louisa, and Sheila?s wartime contributions. I feel I now know more about the book and the war and there were one or two things I had missed which were brought to my attention. As a general comment about the book, I believe I have learned a little about the trauma of injury and disfigurement, this was something which I had never really considered before.

A last reminder that we are meeting tomorrow at 8.00pm in the Clockhouse. We have an opportunity to go on radio four book club next year. We read a book of their choice submit two questions that we may ask. We meet at Broadcasting House get ushered up stairs to the board room have a glass of wine and then a question and answer session with James Naughtie and the author, the session is recorded and transmitted two months later. The listening numbers are over 1.6 million. It's good fun and an enjoyable experience.

See you tomorrow.

Dear book group,

Our next book is Love in the time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

I know some of us have read it already but it was a long time ago and it?s a good read, as I remember it's very funny.

This is for the January meeting will let you know the date next week.

Our end of year meal is to be at Yadas, Arch 163 Rye Lane, SE15 4ST on Wednesday 6th December AT 7.30 pm. I will send a map to you next week.

    • In 2016 London City Airport began using concentrated flight paths. When there's a predominantly westerly wind, incoming aircraft approach from East London (north of the River. When there's a predominantly Easterly wind, incoming aircraft approach the airport from the West: circling through Forest Hill, Dulwich, Vauxhall, Tower Hamlets, Docklands. This latter flight path affects many of us in South East London. https://www.london.gov.uk/who-we-are/what-london-assembly-does/questions-mayor/find-an-answer/london-city-airport-concentrated-flight-paths The planes going into City are often below 2,000 ft, so very noisy. Sometimes we have incoming Heathrow at the same time, flying higher. The early flights that I hear e.g. 04:30 are incoming to Heathrow. They are scheduled to land at 05:30 but are 'early'. Apparently the government allows a percentage of flights to arrive early and late (but these are now established as regular occurrences, informally part of the schedule). IMHO Londoners are getting very poor political representation on this issue. Incredible that if you want to complain about aircraft noise, you're supposed to contact the airport concerned! Preposterous and designed solely in favour of aviation expansion.
    • Yet another recommendation for Jafar. Such a nice guy, really reliable and fair. He fixed a problem with our boiler and then incredibly kindly made two more visits to replace a different part at no extra cost.
    • I didn't have any problems with plane noise until city airport started flying planes to and from about 5-8 minutes apart from 5.30 am or  6 am,  and even with ear plugs and double glazing I am woken at about 6 well before I usually would wake  up. I have lived here since 1986 and it is relatively recently that the planes have been flying far too low over East dulwich. I very much doubt that they are headinbg to Heathrow or from Heathrow. As the crow flies we are much , MUCH closer to City Airport than Heathrow or Gatwick. I even saw one flying so low you could see all the windows, when I was in Peckham Rye Park.
