Weekend overnight getaway with 2 boys

I'm at a bit of a loose end this weekend with my husband away and was thinking of taking the kids somewhere close-ish to London for a one-day or overnight adventure. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have a car but have not taken too many trips out and about. My boys are 3 and almost 5 and good travelers.

How about the Transport Museum in Covent Garden? Bus to Embankment directly from ED and you can let the kids loose. Plenty of options for a meal afterwards in Covent Garden too.

They have trains and buses which the kids can hop on and off.

Southwold/Walberswick is lovely. Lots of lovely beach/ sea and nice ice cream shops. Novelty if littel rowed ferry across the river- fresh fish and chips etc.

Butlins camber sands? Not sure if they do one night stays though.

Or find a b and b in whitstable or somewhere similar? Playing on the beach is fun in all weathers with children

Or a day trip or overnight to Brighton? Drusillas theme park near there is great.

Thanks everyone these are some good ideas. Amydown, you reminded me of the transport museum which is actually doable in the two-on-one scenario, and I may just stick around. Perhaps the weather is putting me off...thanks again!

How about Hastings? There's a good soft play centre (clambers), or trampolining, crazy golf etc on seafront, plus wakling on beach, going up the cliff lifts, running about castle.
