We have lived off Upland Road for 17 years. Never has our cellar flooded. Last night we came back home to find at least half a foot of water in the cellar. Flooding the whole cellar.

We have a membrane with a concrete floor. No sign of leak. So assumed it must be water table or underwater diversion?

I know that Thames water have been doing a lot of work in the area.

Then this morning it has all totally disappeared? Any ideas anyone?

My cellar flooded a couple of years ago and wisdom on the internet said to check drainage which did indeed prove to be the problem. The drainage system in many of the Victorian terraces in East Dulwich pairs two adjoining houses and my neighbour?s cellar was also flooded. As the main drain is shared, it is Thames Water?s responsibility to clear any blockage which they sorted in a matter of hours and the water disappeared. I was very impressed with the guys enthusiasm for their job.

So perhaps your neighbour had a blockage which they cleared or maybe there was a blockage outside under the road which TW cleared? Either way, count yourself lucky it cleared spontaneously - I was just hoping my flood would just go away!

This happened to us many years ago - we have a combined drain with next door (and possibly the house before) and our neighbours were putting nappies down the toilet which caused massive blockage of water and sewage in our cellar. I think the water board sorted it our but was so long ago I cannot remember.

We also have underground streams running under some of the houses in Barry Road and consistent and heavy rainfall in the past have caused water to rise in the cellar.

    • There is no other way than to move out. I am in such a situation myself where our neighbours are complete assholes. They breached the Covenants and when we pointed it they said to take them to court if we want.  Unfortunately, they have made our life miserable and we have to move out.    What helped in our situation is having a calm conversation face to face. It only happened after they tasted their own medicine(i know it's mean but nothing else helps).   I know it's unfair but better move out and prioritise your mental health.
    • Thank you so much for the reply. Jeffery turned up a couple of hours ago. I edited title to say found but somehow it didn't save. Thank you so much for going to the trouble of posting this sighting... even if it didn't turn out to be Jeff.  Jeff came running down the street like a bat out of hell and ran into the house. Never been so relieved. Mind you i've been up and down the roads shouting his name out all day. Even in Wingfield street. 🤗
    • I saw a smallish black cat outside 1 Wingfield Street just now.  I am not convinced it was Jeff, the eyes look a little different.
