Reviewing in my head all the things I'd like for Mother's Day 2012... take a bubble bath alone, one night of uninterrupted sleep, read a newspaper by myself... when it occured to me that these are all things that don't involve a child. Indeed I wouldn't even care about these things if I didn't have a toddler (whom I do love to bits, but would like just a tiny break from now and then!). Oh the irony. Does anyone else secretly want a child-free day for Mother's Day this year?

Mr f and I are currently having an (almost) child free weekend away in a nice hotel having divvied the children out ... Staying about a mile from

My sister who is having the baby during the day while he stays with us at night

Bliss

Just had a lovely swim, sauna and read the paper for a whole hour!

Brilliant!

I read this last night and was echoing the general 'bit of head space' theme going on but this morning received breakie in bed (rather comical attempt but wonderful), some bought gifts and a card (thanks Mr TP) but then the most fabulous home made cards. The one from my oldest daughter had my name spelt out on the back and a lovely statement for each letter in my name e.g. 'A' wonderful mother and amazing too!

I just about fought back the sobs. No head space for me today, will be spending every min with my brood. Although, there will be shouting in a min as I round them up for swimming.

(Normally I am so cynical.)

We definitely all need headspace sometimes; Saffron I am right there with you re: Mother's day yearnings.

I am ailing from a particuarly tricky/nasty tooth extraction last week, and have retreated back to bed. Eldest got up in the night, found the pressies he and Mr B had bought, and came upstairs at 1am half covered in Milk Tray declaring "Mama chocolate!".

Pub later, for a medicinal G&T I reckon.

so, now that my family have beetled off, leaving me in peaceful bliss, thought I'd share my random selection of gifts. A card (trad, lovely) and flowers (which was a complete surprise, Mr Oi not being a flowers kinda guy), this week's NME featuring Robert Smith on the front cover (OK, so I was a huge Cure fan back in the day, but I certainly haven't bought NME for a gazillion years), and a CD of Florence + the Machine's Lungs. Which I already have. But what's this hiding inside? The DVD of Breaking Dawn Part the First!!!! Ooooh, he's such a tease.

that's my day sorted. Feet up, tissues in one hand (for my vile cold, you understand), remote control in the other, and a ludicrously enjoyably rubbish film on the telly. Result. Though I think in abut an hour's time I'm gonna miss those two. Love 'em to bits.

Just been for a swim with no 4 child and no 1 child (borrowed from

My sister who has been looking after him ..will catch up with 2 and 3 later when we arrive home

Couldn't actually manage mothers day without seeing them (or any other day, really) but any peaceful hours that can be snatched are always golden

ohhhhh - nice presents! And Ruth - I could do with the medicinal G&T....

What I would really, really like is to sit and watch a dvd, lazing around on a sunday afternoon when the weather isn't great and not feel like I should be doing something else. But - the image of my one year old proudly presenting me with a mothers' day card this morning was just so very lovely :)

Hmm a bit of a failure to plan on the part of my lovely husband meant that I had to go to church with a very wriggly 10 month old and a massive hangover while he stayed in to oversee arrival of my mothers day surprise (which is yet to turn up.....)

That all sounds massively ungrateful so I shall just say the best present is being able to be a mother at all. I know how hard I found this day when we were trying to conceieve & failing.

Now I just need coffee & paracetamol....

    • Missing Cat! 11 months old/ Our friend, Coco, has gone missing. Last seen evening of 31st October near top of Henslowe rd where it meets Underhill Rd in SE22. We know she has started wandering up Friern Rd and further we guess but we imagine she has been spooked by Halloween / Fireworks goings on. She is a grey Siberian mix with some brown stripes down her, very friendly and likes to eat. Please let us know
    • That said, organised displays could be on Saturday before and after and the actual day, and private ones could just not have the loud ones.  It’s all down to accessibility and people caring/not caring
    • The problem this year is that 5th November falls on a Wednesday. So some places will be bringing their "bonfire night" forward to Saturday 1st and some will be knocking it back to Saturday 8th and there'll probably be a few that just go with Wednesday 5th anyway. If you're doing a public display, having it on a weekend gets more crowds. Which basically means a solid week of fireworks.
    • Fireworks in this area do feel totally incessant at this time of year, almost every evening there is terrible noise. I feel great concern for wildlife, pets (I have a senior cat who hates them), as well as people who struggle with PTSD etc. Last year I even had people setting them off in front of my home. Tonight and yesterday evening have been particularly bad. Is there anything we can do as a community to prevent this? What action can we take? Surely we shouldn’t be expected to just put up with it every year for weeks on end!
