I have another venue enquiry! My parents are celebrating 50 years of marriage this autumn, & my sister and I want to throw them a party. We were thinking of about 50 people for a sit down buffet. My parents are quite traditional, so quirky pubs are out, and we'd like an outside space or a balcony for guests to have drinks before we eat. Ideally we want somewhere that looks lovely from the outside as well as inside. We've looked at the Horniman (to die for, but gulp!) and a few other lovely venues, but are after somewhere slightly less 'financially challenging'. We are happy to do our own catering, but would consider somewhere with a caterer included. I realise that to a certain extent you get what you pay for, but I thought I'd just ask in case anyone knew of a hidden gem in the South London area. (Or Surrey, or Kent borders)

Any suggestions gratefully received!

I went to a wedding at Beauberry House last year, and it was absolutely beautiful, but my mum & sister visited it last week during the day (it's going to be a daytime party) & they thought it was a bit grubby: there was a broken window, & they had to wait for quite a while in a smelly downstairs room (wee, smoke n crisps!) for the lady who came to show them round. Sis thought it was nice & had potential, mum not so impressed. We do need to stay local. Herne Tavern looks great, but my parents don't want a pub feel. Can't afford the Horniman (ten grand inc buffet for 40!) but do want somewhere nice with a bit of a 'posh & romantic' feel. Thanks for those who've posted ideas so far - Any other ideas? All welcome - am tearing my hair out!!!

    • Thanks all!  KateS - boulangerie Jade is a nice cafe, but they don't do fresh cream cakes. Their eclairs are filled with patisserie cream (a kind of custard), not fresh cream. Azalea- thanks and I've been to Bunhead Bakery (a Palestinian bakery) in Herne Hill a few times. There's a nice chocolate bun they do, which is amazing when then sauce is warmed up. But I haven't seen any fresh cream things there, only white icing. Maybe it's only on a certain day.  And the last time I checked, Ayres bakers in Nunhead don't do fresh cream things. These are the kind of fresh baked goods I'm thinking of....
    • Warning to parents using the playground in Dulwich Park. My daughter and her friends found a bag of ‘crunchy powder’ in the children’s playground this morning around 11ish. They thought it was ‘popping candy’ and all tried some before seen with it. Request to parents using the playground - if you see plastics bags with suspect looking contents or powder on the floor in the playground or park: pick it up and throw it in the bin. Don’t walk past and think someone else will deal with it. The next person to walk by might be a child who could pick it up not understanding what it could be. Hopefully our daughter and her friends will be ok and it’s a lucky escape. But please be aware in case anyone else’s child may have found it before them.
    • I’m looking for some ply sheets, ideally 9mm or 12mm. It doesn’t have to look good. As long as it’s not rotten it’ll be fine. I’d like bigger sheets, but I’m open to whatever anyone’s got. If you can help, drop me a DM.  Cheers
    • the only known name is from that poster in the window where it says to email [email protected]. I thought that website might shed some light on who is creating the posters I hope whoever was attacked is doing ok, but agree there is something very off/vigilante-ish about all of this
