My 9 month old has gone on what I hope is only a temporary breastfeeding strike. She has always refused a bottle and won't drink formula or expressed milk from a cup either.

The only way I seem to be able to get any milk into her is in her food so she is having very runny porridge and mashed potato, but I am struggling to come up with other ideas. Any recipes or tricks/tips would be great including ways to get her to drink more water...she will have the odd sip from a cup, but not what I would call a proper drink.

Doctor confirmed today that she does have a slight ear and throat infection so hopefully this will be short-lived.

Thanks!

Hmmm no experience of this personally but I just wondered about making some expressed breastmilk icecream as that might be tempting and nice on her throat? Or mixing milk in with yoghurt if she likes that, really stirring it in well so it's just a bit sloppier... I had to do that with antibiotics with my son (and had to add sugar/honey at first - he was over a year though - as he was point blank refusing and babyled weaned!!) - it was a great short-term fix.

Other idea is to syringe feed her milk as you would medicine? SLow but would get some milky calories in...

Good luck, hope she gets better soon and you don't get too engorged...

Thanks for that. Also, if anyone has an industrial strength pump they wouldn't mind hiring out for a few days, please pm me.

I'm not managing to get much with my pump and had supply problems before this so would be gutted to not have any milk left if she returns to the boob.

Thanks.

Just guessing and trying to think laterally...

Pancakes/ drop scones? Would she drink a smoothie made with her favourite fruit?

Bubble & squeak from those wonderful mashed spuds (!)

Pasta and cheese sauce, if you use strong cheddar you could mix in a fair bit of milk and cornflour maybe

Is it possible to make risotto with milk? Or is that just rice pudding.... in which case - Rice Pudding???

Poor bub, poor you. Hope you are all feeling better soon. x

If she has sore throat and ears I think it will be short lived

I would offer familiar soft foods (toast, yoghurt) for a day or two, try weak squash if she isn't drinking much, keep offering the breast and have lots of cuddles skin to skin

Bath/nap together

Hope she is back to normal soon

    • Excited to welcome Banook to the neighbourhood. Love a good bagel.
    • Majority of reported hate crime is based on ethnicity, brown, black and mixed heritage. Religious hate crime is lower and most affects Muslims, Jews to a slightly lowers number and a small percentage of Hindus and Sikhs.   Real or perceived atrocities committed by Muslim extremists and the state of Israel will influence numbers  Anyone who has been to a protest against the war in Gaza will see mainly peaceful and good natured crowds including Jews against war. @CPR Dave stop making a fool of yourself. Corbyn cannot admit to being wrong.  He sprouted nonsense that Russia was not responsible for the Salisbury poisoning, would not be contrite about the accusations of anti-Semitism, and is partly to blame for Brexit. He may be principled and a decent person but is not a Messiah and ran a poor campaign in the 2019 general election, a gift for Johnson. I expect he would have been pants in dealing with COVID, and Johnson set a low bar. I'm with Miss Jean Brody on the Spanish Civil War.  It maybe not!
    • How does your mind work? This is a thread about a bakery that may be opening. Your grasp of history is extremely weak. Mosley’s fascists were opposed and defeated all over the east end, not with petitions either. The principal leadership in driving them back came from the Communist Party but it was a united, cross community movement. The Daily Mail provided constant support for the British Union of Fascists and, along with sections of the Conservative Party, echoed their racist rhetoric. Plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose. Excuse my French. To characterise pro-Palestinian demonstrations attended by thousands of Jews among the hundreds of thousands of people from across British society as “protesting Jews’ rights to exist” or comparing them to Mosley’s blackshirts is frankly sickening. You should be utterly embarrassed and ashamed of yourself.
    • I really hope so too, but they aren't going to get much passing trade, and parking round there isn't easy. Fingers crossed.
