nxjen
I?ve just been charged 10p for a carrier bag in Tescos. I asked whether they had any 5p bags but I was told it was the law now they were only able to sell the 10p bags. Is this in fact correct? Whilst this was proposed last year, I can?t see any confirmation that it is law yet. I have no objection to paying the 10p, my objection is that retailers are quoting a law that doesn?t exist. JohnL
Same in M&S in Holborn - I gave the manager a dirty look after putting my sandwich in a huge bag. They want us to use our own I think which I will try to. DulwichFox
Once the carrier bag Tax was put in place the price can be set at any level I think it will rise... 10p -- 15p -- 20p -- 25p ------ 50p. nxjen
I agree the retailers can set the price at any level they choose but I was told it was the law that they had to charge 10p rather than the original 5p and I don?t believe this is correct. edcam
It is apparently the plan for the price to rise to 10p but not until January 2020. They can charge what they like but they can't tell you this law is already in effect, because it isn't.But we should all really try not to buy them at all. Jules-and-Boo
No - the law is a minimum of 5p per bag, so technically you were advised incorrectly. They can charge more if they want but smaller shops don't have to charge Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/227846-tesco-and-carrier-bags/#findComment-1343337 Share on other sites
nxjen
?But we should all really try not to buy them at all.?I know, I know ... and I know I should keep a carrier bag in my bag just in case I decide to do some unplanned shopping but we are fallible. Jules-and-Boo
the more they charged the more people are likely to remember to keep a spare handy Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/227846-tesco-and-carrier-bags/#findComment-1343342 Share on other sites
JohnL
This is from 2017https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/aug/07/tesco-to-end-sales-of-5p-carrier-bagsI see myself using something more robust then the bags for life which I exchange frequently after "holing"edit: I think it's cucumbers that are worst for breaking them. snoopy17
Lucky you weren't in Iceland, forgot to bring my bag and asked the lady for a 10p one. She conveniently had ran out of all the cheap bags and only had a 50p one available. Rosetta
Doz M&S replace their 10p bags for free when they become unusable. I know sainsburys used to but I don't think they do those bags anymore. Help-Ma-Boab
Could you not just carry your sandwich in the packet in your hand? Needed a bag? M&S sandwiches come boxed/sealed don't they? ETA: Think I get it now - re read and you didn't actually want a bag. Stand down...JohnL Wrote:-------------------------------------------------------> Same in M&S in Holborn - I gave the manager a> dirty look after putting my sandwich in a huge> bag. > > They want us to use our own I think which I will> try to. malumbu
They are plastic bags. They are evil. The French just banned them (you can buy proper sturdy ones that will last forever). Simple. Stop whinging and do your bit. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/227846-tesco-and-carrier-bags/#findComment-1343620 Share on other sites
JohnL
actually the jute ones seem best for my shopping (and last through the battering I give them) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/227846-tesco-and-carrier-bags/#findComment-1343685 Share on other sites
Sue
I like the net bags (except for things which may fall through the holes!)They are light and easy to carry as they take up virtually no room, but expand to hold a lot.I used to use those nylon (?) ones which fold up into a tiny bag. Until the day I put keys in them, and the keys made a hole in the bag and dropped out through the hole. Somewhere in Penge :))Unluckily they were somebody else's keys. Luckily they didn't have any identifying features. Ooops.
