Poor Service of local handymen

Recommended Posts

Dear Neighbours

I recently moved back to Forest Hill where I grew up and I have to say I am very upset with the poor service of handymen in the area. Despite trying to contact recommendations on this site - very few handyman have replied or been available and those that I have managed to employ have been disappointing. Chris Tickner was the first handyman I employed recently who messed up the job and should not have been recommended on this site, despite having a dodgy hip - he also has bad eyesight - so ladders and straight lines are a big problem (let alone just getting up the stairs and even carrying his own tool box). The second handyman I employed was Aston who comes highly recommended on this site and is a brilliant handyman, he does a first class job, really knows his stuff BUT on his initial quotation he wanted to charge the equivalent to ?75 per hour, I managed to renegotiate the rate down to ?55per hour, but that is still extortionate for putting up a shelf and flat pack furniture. It's totally unethical. The rates i was charged in N London were between ?20-30 per hour which is reasonable and what I was expecting. I am just so upset that the home I grew up in hasn't a community that is tainted in this way.

I think perhaps it is time to shut this conversation down as I am starting to feel offended by the tome and manner of some of the responses, which if continues I will report. I do not feel it is necessary to question or judge the personal circumstances which led to the employment of Aston (whether I was obliged to use him or not!) In my personal opinion I felt his charge was unethical and I will not endorse it! I have now found another local handyman whose workmanship is just as good as Aston's and charges less than half the price, his name is Aron and I will be using him in future.

    • Our son really doesn't interact with others much and very rarely gets out, but when he does, an ice cream at the cafe is a favourite treat (even when it's freezing outside). Like yours, it's a single-person data point - in our case, no illness. Bugs can come from anything/anyone - other people are far more likely to be the unwitting carriers, in my view. Having gone there for years and years, never had a concern re the ice cream. And generally do worry about linking an establishment with illness/standards, even as a question as, even subconsciously, the association may stick in people's minds (and if they stop the ice cream, we'll be devastated!).
    • However, it is worth noting that an area which is selling food outside (and to children) is quite likely to attract customers who are Noro-virus carriers and may contaminate things. Norovirus is very catching. One of the positive results from Lockdown and the emphasis on hand washing was a significant decrease in seasonal afflictions such as Norovirus. So this may have been associated with the ice cream purchase and consumption but not consequential on specific hygiene failures by its purveyor. Considering just how catching Norovirus is, if it is that you will need to exercise considerable care at home to avoid it spreading round your family.
    • Places selling ice cream have to conform to really strict hygiene regulations. It's highly unlikely that a place like the cafe on Peckham Rye would risk their customer's health, or their reputation, by not adhering to them. As said above, there are lots of things going around at the moment.
    • Oh for heavens sake, kid has an upset stomach or a bug…  are you trying to blame cafe?low response rate.. You a new Mom? Can understand concern, flagging but your child unless a baby or toddler, has  just got a bug…temp or constant upheave, obviously Kings or ambulance .
