Has anyone else volunteered to be a Games Maker and been a bit surprised by their shifts? I volunteered for 10 days but have given 12 days. We were told shifts would be 8-10 hours but many of mine are 12 hours, including 3 consecutive days of 12 hour shifts with early starts. I signed up in good faith, prepared to take time off work to volunteer, but feel slightly as if someone's taking the mick. Anyone else experienced something similar?

Lu - I'm not a Gamesmaker but have a few friends who were told that the portal wasn't entirely correct so it's worth querying by phone if you've got some funny results in there. They knew of one person who had (accidentally) been given 31 days on the trot. Having said that - 3 days x 12 hours fits with quite a few of their shifts so might be correct.

Lu hi

Yup - same here - mine are all 12 hour shifts ( some nearer 13 ) plus have been advised 45 minutes from park entrance to actual venue, which means I will be leaving my accommodation ( floor of friends house in Essex !) around 4.30am for a 6.15/6.30 am start. Also cannot find any info on why we are required so incredibly early or about proper breaks, only half an dhour for a 6.5 hour shift - OUCH !!

I've only been allocated 10-hour shifts, but the shift pattern is just crazy ! Not to mention unsafe ! I couldn't imagine any haulage company asking their drivers to work such hours (or being allowed to !), why is LOCOG so idiotic ? If they have to have drivers overnight (and who needs transporting at 3am ?) then work the same shift for the week, not change around. I've worked shifts before including overnight but never have I tried to do shifts where you work overnight, then days, then back to overnight then back to days all within the same week.

But that's what they've tried to give me. I've even said I can't do overnights anyway because of my own temporary living arrangements, but they've just ignored me !

Due to do training this weekend, but seriously thinking if this isn't sorted out, then I'll pull out too.

    • Went to a fireworks display maybe 20 years ago at the Crystal Palace, it wasn't bonfire night, can't remember why it was being held, Capital Radio were there. There were people hanging from a crane, classical music, and quiet fireworks,  It was lovely, still dramatic with the colours but no loud bangs. Not sure why this hasn't become the norm.
