Hi -

Apologies in advance if there are already threads on this very topic (feel free to point me toward them, but the search wasn't overly fruitful for aggregate advice!)

I was just wondering if anyone has helpful hints on nanny share set-ups - E.g.

1. What to agree in advance between the families & the nanny

2. Items to include in the contract

3. Do both families need to register with a tax-payment solution or can one family do it w/out additional hassle / cost / risk?

4. If both families need to register for tax / NI for the nannny, can this be done via HMRC for nanny share?

5. Issues that have arisen from other nanny shares that it would be good for us to be aware of in advance so that we can mitigate?

6. If the nanny will work from my house, do I need to get any additional kind of insurance?

We've got a basic list compiled based on discussion / web research, but I know this forum is full of nanny share knowledge and know-how (and know-how-not-to-do)!

Thx!

Nicole

We have been in a nanny share for almost 2 years and it's been great. We found a nanny who already had been working for a family for years so we sort of 'joined in' (i.e. we didn't start with two families looking to find a nanny together). From my experience, the answers I can give are:

1. Generally agree which days you will be at which house - it seems to make sense to keep this consistent.

2. When you register with a nanny tax company, they will give you a template contract that you can tailor to your needs.

3. I strongly recommend that both families use a nanny tax company - it doens't cost much and takes so much headache away and personally my nanny appreciates that she gets proper paperwork from us every month and at year end. Plus they are always available to answer questions about tax codes, etc. I have been using PAYE for Nannies and they have been brilliant.

4. Absolutely. This is a real job for your nanny and it is illegal not to be registered as an employer with HMRC and pay over the tax, so both families must do this. The one thing to be careful about is that you ensure that you share the tax code, otherwise one family will pay an unfair share of tax (this presumes you agree a net wage with your nanny and are grossing up - if not, then it doesn't matter).

5. Not that I can think of.

6. Not that I know of. I have never heard of any other families getting this either, but again I'm sure the nanny tax company could advise.

Feel free to PM me with any other questions!

We have a lovely nanny share that has been going almost a year, and had another share for a year before that. Feel free to PM me if you want to.

I personally think that it is really important to be open and discuss any issues, changes, positive or neagative feedback etc as early as possible, so that everyone knows where they stand.

You have the option to set up as separate employers or moe employer, but which ever you do the employer(s) need to register with HMRC and pay the nanny using PAYE. I do my own, but the other family uses a payroll service. We both agreed the same gross salary for the nanny, so we didn't have to split the tax code.

It's a good idea to have a contract between the two families if you are not setting up as a joint employer. Think about what you would do if one family wants to leave the nannyshare, and how much notice you need to make any major changes to the plans (like having another child, or changing the host arrangements...)

As an employer, you should have Employer's Liability Insurance. Your home insurance should have this for domestic employees, but do check this as you could need a separate policy.

    • Nope, not "complaining or moaning", stating an opinion. Tax - yes we are taxed to the hilt, the threshold is £12570, Govts not increasing this means more and more people get dragged into paying tax. HMRC are a joke, even if you're below that figure they take tax that has to be claimed back as its wrongly deducted.  Inflation is supposedly dropping, the reality in the shops is the total opposite, week on week almost, prices increase, utilities increase etc. I don't want to live under a left wing govt, if you do, suggest you try living in Russia.
    • But only the first g in garage is a "hard" g? The second one is a "soft" g whether you pronounce it "j" or (not sure how to write it, but even softer, like a cross between "sh" and "j"?) So surely Malumbu's hard g in Farage would be like the first g in garage, not the second one? I can't believe I am wasting my time writing this irrelevant drivel 🤣
    • I'm currently on a little mission to recommend Jovaner, who I've recommended here before, and who has done lots of work for me over the years. The scope of works he can take on, and his skills, have expanded over the years. He now comfortably undertakes full house renovations, including bathroom and kitchen fit outs (he is currently doing my bathroom as we speak). He is a talented carpenter, tiler, plumber and decorator, and has the highest standards of any tradesperson I've every worked with (have a look at the kitchens and furniture that my company - West & Reid - makes for a frame of reference for my standards, if I say so myself! 🙂 Jovaner always meets and goes beyond my expectations. There aren't many people as multi-talented as him, and very few with such high standards. He is the first person I turn to when I need work done in my house - I've waited 6 months for him to do my bathroom, as he was the only person I wanted to do it. I wouldn't hesitate to get him to renovate my entire house if it needed it!  He is also the hardest working person I have ever met, and completely trustworthy, as I am sure multiple other recommendations on this site will attest to.  If you are wondering why I'm going to so much trouble to recommend him it's simply because he's so good, and every time he does a new job I am reminded of how good he is. But he constantly undersells himself, underprices his work, and has such attention to detail and such high standards that he rarely earns what he deserves for the work he does!  His number is 07429171373.  Happy to chat to anyone who wants the recommendation in person (07745553232) Malcolm
