Why is Southwark Council funding the full cost of privately owned shopfronts , shop signs and forecourts for the shops at the top end of Lordship Lane and in Underhill Road whilst at the same time neglecting to repair its pavements in Upland Road . The section between Barry and Crystal Palace Roads is in a dangerous condition with broken and uneven paving. Upland Road is on route to Northcross Road as well as Lordship Lane and is always heavy with pedestrian traffic , especially mothers with prams.

Surely , the Council should first ensure that the basics , such as pavements , are kept in a safe order before it starts wasting money on replacing shopfronts and shop signs.

Intresteing that money spent on resufacing North Cross road.. Pavements were done previously there.

I saw some guy last week cleaning the gaps in the individual bricks of the pavement on N.C. Road.

He had a stick thing with a spike at the end.

It's like Russia and China where you only get to see the good bits..

I'ts like the entire budget for SE22 is being spent on North Cross Road...

Councilors ?? Any ones ears burning.

Lack of money I would guess...

Hi manindulwichse22,

Southwark Council had a backlog of road and pavement works totalling ?18m a couple of years ago. Some minimal monies are devolved to local councillors. We decided to spend our ED ward ?33,333 for financial year 11/12 on North Cross Road. Two reasons - condition of the road and that its a street market with many more people walking around it. Also until it was re surfaced we seemed to be gettting resistance about marking our market pitches so stall holders turn up from 5am making a hell of a racket to grab better pitches causing a lot of upset for all the local residents. This marking now seems possible.

Where to spend FY12/13?

My ward colleague Cllr Rosie Shimell has studied the area you mention with a wheel chair bound resident. So we plan on ensuring proper access in the area. We're also thinking a number of other locations where the pavement is broken and needs fixing. And also several location where the road marking have worn away and causing local problems - around Chesterfield car wash for example. Hope this makes sense. Would be delighted for more input via emails to [email protected]/uk

Hi DulwichFox,

The south side North Cross Road pavement was renewed in gharish red brick prior to 2006 when I was first elected using Cleaner Greener Safer money.

Why just one side?

Because that side has most pedestrian movements due to market stalls facing that way.

That some guy with a stick! I'm presuming you mean the wonderful Pete our brilliant street cleaner. He used to do Barry Road then was moved to Upland Northcross, he works tirelessly keeping our pavements clean and always says Good Morning Lovely Lady Much Respect! and we should say MUCH RESPECT to him too!!

He was doing a great job..

Cleaning out the gaps and sweeping up the debris.

Really thorough.

And was jovial and happy.

He genuinely was taking great pride in his work.

A good revenue stream would be for the council to charge those who drive over the pavement to park

in front gardens for damaged caused by the vehicle. My street is suffering from sunken/broken slabs

and kerb stones from vehicles driving over un-lowered sections to enable parking off road.

PS

I'm happy to chip in the ?18 if that helps balance the book.

i still cannot understand as to why the Council is wasting limited funds on flashy signs and new forecourts for privately owned shops in Underhill Road and the top of Lordship Lane whilst at the same time it is neglecting the pavements in Upland Road. I personally know some of these shopkeepers , who seem to be very wealthy and not in need of charity or freebies.

    • Actually, if it was factory fitted then it's location would be documented. It's the fact that it can be fitted in different places which means that it's difficult for thieves to locate.
    • OK, good suggestion and it appears that the after-market price is about £260. But if that that was fitted ex-factory then the cost would be substantially less and certainly a small fraction of the price of a high-end car.
