...oh no that was absolutely the best bit about the whole thing, some comments were really nutty, laugh out loud, green-ink specials. No doubt I'll be branded a Monarchist or Royalist for saying so :-S

Your first points are a discussion all of their own, but regarding the adoption of the Union *Flag* (!) by ultra right wing extreme groups, then I disagree. It should be reclaimed, not handed over. Abandoning it wouldn't change anything - look at how long the Confederate Flag has survived.


Anyway, I though the Mall looked amazing decked out end to end with the flag. And that is coming from an Aussie. Usually British and English flag waving is a tedious exercise in breast-beating (mainly due to it being sport related), but the Jubilee weekend was just a wonderful celebration of Britishness. It was a rare joy.

PS. @Loz... a bit of an urban (national?) myth... usage has meant that the name Union Jack is quite correct when referring to the national flag - it hasn't needed to be fixed to a jack staff to qualify for the name and was approved by parliament when it said in 1908 "the Union Jack should be regarded as the National flag".

      I think there's a lot in what you say. Although bi election results aren't usually indicative of GE results, I was horrified to see Reform support was so high in what had previously been a Labour stronghold, Labour and Conservative results reflecting the tired old parties they are.  It isn't our generation (sorry @Sue if I'm being presumptuous!) that will decide the outcome of elections but those in their 20s, 30s, 40s ... if they can be bothered to vote. The Greens and Reform now present a real choice instead of two centrist main parties of the last 30 years which has put people off voting. Perhaps locally I will continue to vote Labour, i really couldn't bear for the LibDems to return and we have to consider the demographic of the whole of Southwark. But come the GE I will probably vote Green.

      I agree but in the case of McAsh, that would just have left his constituents without a councillor for 3 months until the May elections. MPs switching parties is really galling. If an MP is suspended for law breaking etc., then a recall petition can be issued and, if enough of the constituents support it, a by-election is called. I think the same should apply for defectors.

      Interesting discussion point @Moovart, should they wait till the next election or should it trigger an immediate by-election so the post is not left empty ?  Your concept is logical and may have the added effect of swaps, lke the Premier league, only happening in a defined transfer window just before each election.
