We live on Dunstan's road and this morning around 8am a guy came to the door with a slightly confusing story about needing a lift to hospital cause his dad needed help - the story was really sketchy and didn't really make sense. We said we didn't have a car (which is true) so he wanted money or to leave something valuable in return for a taxi.

They only reason we didn't help (apart from not having a car) is that he said he was from a number house were pretty sure he's not.

Anyway, be careful as seemed like he might be doing door to door checking things out.

As I've been burgled after something similar (man at door saying he got the wrong house number, left on school run within minutes of him leaving - with dogs, back home to find I'd been burgled), I always answer the door with my phone in hand. If it's an emergency, I can phone the police. If it's odd, I have my phone ready to take a photo. Sad days, but it is what it is.

Oh I was going to ask if anyone had had a man come to the door on Friday night in the Whateley Road area. He rang the bell around 7.30pm and when I shouted out to ask who it was he said something like: "er.... I was just wondering if this used to be a house share" which sounded sketchy AF and I told him I was too busy to come to the door and he went away.

Anyone else get the same visitor?

Correct - this is one of the oldest tricks in the book. Be 100% firm and say "I think this is a scam, and I'm calling the police" end of.

They do not live near by as they often claim, also describing emergency where by they need

Money to pay for a cab. (Wife going into labour, emergency at school, sonebody in A and E etc.

We had the same man try it on with the same story a year apart. Wheb we told him

He just said ?oh sorry? and ambled off.

    • It has come to this author’s attention that the world of 4+ admissions — that most enigmatic of educational rites — continues to bewilder even the most composed of parents. Fear not. For in a former life, I was not merely a humble observer, but a seasoned educator of over twenty years, and Head of Pre-Prep for a distinguished dozen. Now, with quill exchanged for touchscreen, I have taken to that most modern of salons — Instagram — to dispense guidance, answer frequently whispered questions, and illuminate the shadowy corners of school selection with clarity and calm. Each post bears my signature twist: a blend of insight, levity, and the occasional raised eyebrow. Should you find yourself adrift in the sea of admissions, I suggest you peruse my latest dispatch. • Perhaps Gooseygreeny was not familiar with the wildlife before Gala was imposed on the park, since when its value to wildlife has deteriorated. The Park had never been disturbed before, as the council had respected it as a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation, so only the Common was licensed by them as a site for events. The first time Gala held their event, there was a tree with woodpeckers nesting in it right in the middle of the main field they used and thrushes, blackbirds and great tits nesting within the shrubs and trees immediately surrounding the field. The woodpeckers were thriving on ants from the anthills in the grass. To those of us who used to enjoy watching the wildlife, it was very obviously a Site of Importance for a variety of birds. Despite being accessed by the public and their dogs, it had been relatively undisturbed,  which was one of the main reasons why it was so special and why I have been opposed to the Gala festival being held during the bird nesting season.
