No he was a about 5'-7" Very friendly.. who would say 'O come on man' with a cheeky smile.

you just knew he was having you on.

He did not sit there all dishevelled with sad eyes..

His shift ended at 22.00 then a girl took over..

They would chat and all smiley, They were organised..

I was told by many locals who knew him.. He lived on Barry Rd. and drove an old Merc.

Ive been working with homeless people, and those with drug and alcohol problems, for 20 years, and I do not give anything.

Its no that I don't care. Its just that overall, whatever you give, won't change anything. If its used properly it will provide the person with food, but people in that situation have often re-arranged their needs over time, and will often buy drink or drugs.

Don't feel you are being uncaring. If you want to make it count, give your hard earned dosh to useful charities etc that do make a difference.

I used to give occasionally, but now never. There has been an increase in Dulwich recently, but I suppose as with the world in general need has increased. There are a few newcomers to Dulwich who seem to have migrated from Peckham to Lordship lane, one of which is a guy who has been rude and abusive to myself, friends and partners in the past.

Another couple of guys who has spun me the same hospital and bus money story so many times I could probably recite it word for word myself.

As was said previously, in general there's nothing much you can do apart from not giving to people on the street and give money to the charities that actually benefit from your money.

Hopefully then there wouldn't be need for a somewhat shocking and narrow-minded thread as this.

I too feel more miffed with the chuggers on LL, and everytime I have offered the red haired chap who sits outside the co-op food as I too am short on change - he has refused. :(

Thanks for that intexasatthe moment, very helpful. I know the gentlemen in question as I lived in Peckham for many years before moving to East Dulwich and I actually have eyes and a brain which allow me to recognise faces. Maybe this is a skill you are lacking along with the ability to write a constructive message.

Yep, East Ham, West Ham, Canning Town, Plaistow, Manor Park, Forest Gate, Beckton, and Stratford.

Stratford is the only bit that seems to be getting much of a facelift.

There used to be a young man with a dog on the stairs at London Bridge in 1993 and he was begging one morning at 8.30ish. I gave him 50p and returned to the station after work to see him and his mates with a very large bottle of cider. I have never given anyone who is begging anything since but as he was there every day after that I expect he was making a few quid. ( and I am not surprised at the stabbing news from Stratford- I left there years ago- it's a powder keg)

I never give to anyone who uses alcohol, narcotics of any kind or tobacco, until they can satisfy me that they have not imbibed either for at least one year, in which case I do. Until such time as people put a complete stop to their circularity, there is no point in supporting. When they do, and move into direction, I sponsor.

Its quite clever must have given up drinks drugs etc and have certificate on them on the street. Then you dont have to give them anything.

It's very easy to see when someone is free from a drug addiction, they have a certain energy about them that isn't driven by craving but of course you have to be free of it yourself to see it.

Someone who is free from a substance abuse habit will have clear bright eyes, not glazed. They will have a fresh complexion, not ashen and pimply. They will have a good posture, not concave and slouched. This is not a delusion to see this difference but I'm sure your mates on here will be rolling in the isles at your ascerbit wit

So tell me, pipsky 2008, how do you tell a druggie/drinker from someone who is 'merely' depressed, lacking in confidence and, say, not sleeping well or eating enough fruit and veg? Did you know unemployment can lead to insomnia, depression and low self-esteem?

Not that I necessarily disagree that it's far better to give your cash to a decent charity. That could help substance abusers as well as the unemployed etc.
