Last I we asked for suggestions for holidays off the beaten track in Europe and got some very interesting replies including several for Montenegro, so that's where we are looking at going this year IF we can manage to avoid crowded developed areas but still get somewhere on the coast with character, nice views, etc etc.

If anyone has been and can give ideas of the best areas to go and where to avoid and any other tips that would be great, thanks!

Hi minitoots, this is where my family are from .... Great for kids but.... It depends How old your kids are and how off the beaten track you're prepared to go.Kotor is beautiful but indeed will be crowded in July. Sveti stefan again is lovely but has been taken over by the aman group and isn't accessible to non guests ( unless you pay a premium to go onto the beach)! I think the area being referred to by the post above me is "Budva" which has a gorgeous old town but again gets crowded in July. The new built up part of Budva ain't great. The national park and skadar lake area are cool but you miss out on the beaches. Have you thought about Croatia? There's a great little island called "Bol" that is slightly off the beaten track but easy to get to (ferry from split) Great if you have kids.

We went in 2012 and second everything Yak and Libbyer said - Montenegro is a fantastic destination - no crowds (if you avoid certain coastal resorts), much cheaper than neighbouring Croatia, fabulous scenery, several world heritage sites, 2nd deepest canyon after the Grand canyon, the biggest lake in Europe complete with waterlillies and deserted islands and crystal clear waters, great local wines and beer, fab weather, etc etc. We stayed near Perast on the bay of Kotor. - send a PM if you want any more info on where to stay etc. Highly recommended!!

    • The country is headed straight for a financial iceberg on 26th November. Starmer can rearrange the chairs on the deck of the Titanic, but we all know what happened. We are already ina depression which will only get deeper until one Party can turn things around, but on the current performance there is no saving us. Doom and gloom yes, but also reality kicking in.  The new Greens leader is another nut job who should be in an asylum for his own good. Starmers swift reshuffle was surprising, so lets see how things stand in 6 months to see if it made any difference. Question to ask, why did he get rid of the Leader of the House and the Scottish Secretary? What did they do wrong to be sacked? The rest of his appointments are moving people around who are already in Cabinet. Does he have no faith in what they did or didn't do?   Hopefully Reform will not make the advances they hope too, way to far right wing.
    • I do worry English people are focusing on “the flag” and their own wistful nostalgia (how very English) rather than what’s happening with the flag in 2025 stop analysing it as the mere national flag and have a look at it for what it is - the useful tool of intimidation by some extremely dodgy people (see also the Irish tricolour when the IRA were active) defeat the problem, then you can reclaim the flag  pretending there is no problem whilst saying “it’s just a flag” is just…. Sigh
