Never been to Brixton Market but we're gonna head over this aft.

I met a Columbian guy a few weeks ago he said there's a stall there selling his Country's food.

Bumped into a Thai guy last week he said his wife runs a stall there.

I'm into Asian and West Indian cooking so hoping for major treats.

Anyone been there for food / ingredients ?

Any tips for interesting stalls ?

cheers KK

We went to the Columbian restaurant last night - and it was a total meat feast! Well worth checking out... think it was called El Rancho De Lalo....

I had the national Columbian dish which comprised of a spicy sausage, pork belly (with crackling), beef steak, ref-fried kidney beans, rice - with fried egg on top (!), fried plantain and cornbread - all for ?10! Took a photo - will post it when I figure out how!

Great atmosphere too... there were so many cafes/restaurants to try - and loads of cuisines!

Finished the evening off with a glass of wine outside The Agile Rabbit listening to a great jazz funk band - Alice in Grooveland...

We found a couPle of Colombian places to eat and ended up in the smaller, cafe place which has just 2 tables outside.

Has a chicken soup meal which was all good, better half had beans Columbian sausage rice salad.

Both dishes were ?8. Had no room left for an Empanada (beef pastie, deep fried).

Plenty grocery and ingredient shopping done.

For me, everything that Peckham Rye Lane has plus the international eateries, not as easy to get to as Peckham though so for me a great place for choice of cuisine.

Cheers for tips. KK

There are a couple of really interesting deli shops on Atlantic Road. The Chorizo sausage caught my eye when I looked through the meat by the Columbian butcher located in Brixton Village. Personally, I don't think there's much difference in Asian/West Indian food between Peckham and Brixton. Especially as Brixton locals are now shopping in Rye Lane as the choice is much wider.

Deptford market have four far eastern food shops amongst the ethnic food shops. Worth a visit if you're cooking skills involves international flavouring.

A bit late now and not an ingredients stall!

However there's a realy nice place to eat called Kaosan in the village. It has lovely spicey thai food and is pretty good value. Well worth a try.

Lots going on in Brixton yesterday I heard it was mobbed. NBA players down in the basketball show by the Ritzy?

Never too late as we'll defo be going again, and soon.

Didn't see Kaosan - where abouts was it (I'm readin Brixton Village as that covered area under the railway lines) ?

There was a Thai Place called Yum-D situated in the covered area next to Brixton Market, on a covered lane leading to Coldharbour Lane, they served dishes from my favourite region, Isaan (North East), such as sticky rice, Som Tam papaya salad, Laab minced pork salad.

Someone warned me about the basketball event which was up on the pave areas in front of Ritzy, but it posed no issues for the market that I could see. Having never been to the market before I could not gauge whether the crowds were thicker than usual. It was crowded we weren't bothered.

One thing I forgot to mention was the Columbian cafe sold us some of their home made soft cheese which this afternoon my partner will be using to make us Aarapas (s

One good thing about the market was the density of fruit n veg shops within a small area meaning plenty choice and less footwork.

One thing I forgot to mention was that the Columbian cafe sold us some of their soft cheese so this afternoon my partner will be making Arrapas (sp.), lucky me.

Apologises, early morning post before. The place is called Kaosarn. Its the Coldharbour Lane side of the market on the corner.

Lots of treats in that market place but it can be a little daunting to some. SO crowded and cramped.

    • Most churches rent out halls for children's' parties but rarely adult parties, Christ Church only does afternoon parties,   The East Dulwich Community centre hires out halls to 9 pm only and all music needs to be on a sound restrictor as is in a residential area. St Johns with St Clements have a small hall but not sure if they allow adult parties. Nunhead Green has a newish community centre with a couple of different size halls. Most places seem to charge around £40 ph  with a deposit of £100/200 (returned if no damage or excess cleaning needed.
    • Hello, Recently there have been various comments made on the forum which have resulted in heated discussions being had. I for one, hold up my hand and wanted to personally thank whoever is keeping the forum going.. remember when it was likely to close. We are all adults and should known when it is right to continue or just ignore or if really feel it necessary comment via pm. I have had a long relationship with the forum and have bought, sold, offered advice and in deed made friends on the forum over the years. It is a public forum after all and everyone is entitled to express their opinion and is also free. I am not as tech minded as most but with the season of good will approaching and-knowing in this economic climate how many people are  struggling, I  thought it would be a lovely idea, to perhaps set up a just giving page to raise funds for a local charity who might appreciate a contribution towards their Christmas festivities… On a practical side, might just be to complicated to administer as I am sure all have charities that we support so my other thought was not me, as I am useless but to set up a just giving page and whatever monies are raised, perhaps contribute to the festivities that use to be run by local shops or whatever.. Maybe even use a local church hall and just make it special for perhaps folk that find it difficult to access events or no access for say wheel chair users.. guess really, one is looking for guidance from the church and of course volunteers. Shoot me down if you must or feel the need but this is my view and no, sadly I won’t be around in the months before Christmas but can help remotely.
