Hi,

we have a week booked off at the end of September to go away. We are thinking somewhere like Portugal or Majorca - still nice and warm, but not too far. our daughter will be about 21 months then and I will be 6 months pregnant.

I have seen the following two places recommended on the holiday review section of Mumsnet. I really like the look of them and wondered if anyone knows of anything similar in Portugal or Majorica or similar country? The first one is uber expensive and the second one is mid France so I don't think the weather would be reliable in late September.

The aspects that appeal are that they are small and appear to be friendly, family run places. I like the idea of having the self catering option without being tied to it all the time. There would be the opportunity to meet other families, ie not stuck in a self catering villa by ourselves somewhere for a whole week, but we would still have our own space. You would get to know the owners who do the babysitting etc.

I have been searching for somewhere like this in Portugal but can only find big resort type places, which I don't really fancy.

Many thanks!

have a look at this .....

this was self catering, and the lovely women who ran it would pop fresh vegetables from the farm on our table!

Once again we would meet up with other families in the evening (from all over the world) at night, drink a glass of wine and watch the children play ......

You even got your own little reserved spot around the fabulous pool area!

You definately need a car for here, but absolutely beautfiful ....

Okay, so this isn't exactly what you are after but we just came back from this place in Mallorca and really enjoyed it and I still cannot get over what good value it was. The house was lovely, pool was lovely and just a 10 minute drive into Puerto Pollensa with nice restaurants right on the beach (we sat and ate tapas one night while our 2 year old frolicked on the beach in front of us with loads of other children). We BBQed at the house most nights. House has 3 bedrooms with one totally set up for kids(bunk beds plus a single bed plus a travel cot). You could always bring another family with you to make it more fun?!

We stayed here last year http://www.babyfriendlyboltholes.co.uk/hotel_migjorn__deluxe_suite-child-friendly-accommodation-22859.htm

you do need a car to get out and about and to the beach but its set in beautiful countryside, the owners are lovely, some very pretty towns/villages nearby, lovely beaches too.

    • Another recommendation for Dulwich Test and Services Centre. Only been using them for a couple of years but wish I’d found them earlier
    • A new roadmap (surely railmap?!) for rail accessibility has been published: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/accessible-railways-roadmap It says "approximately 56% of stations and around 66% of the 1.3 billion journeys that take place on the network have step-free access to platforms...  "£373 million has been committed over the next 5 years to deliver Access for All projects, providing step-free access from station entrances to and between platforms, alongside other essential accessibility upgrades. These works, together, will increase the number of step-free stations across Great Britain from 56% to 58%. "This improvement will make travel easier with step-free access available at stations covering an increased share of total rail journeys – from 66% up to 71%" Don't know what that means for us here: upgrading Peckham Rye would cover a lot of rail journeys but the cost has no doubt increased from the £40m figure previously quoted. So that would eat into a lot of the funding.
    • It's not really though, is it. It's practical.  At least we're allowed Christmas lights.
