I used to have traditional Goan Vindaloos at the now sadly gone Viva Goa in Crystal Palace a few years ago - medium hot, sweet and sour'ish made with palm vinegar and a splash of red wine. Absolutely delicious, and quite unlike the ubiquitous British high street curry house uber hot (and largely inedible) version.

that sounds fab Voyageur - what a shame that place isn't there anymore! Agree trad Goan vindaloo is a delight, its a shame that 'vindaloo' has such a negative press as you say, an uber hot (yep, inedible at your average curry house) dish over here. I'd love to see more 'curry houses' concentrating on specific Regional/State specialities and doing them well.


- meant to say earlier (staying on topic), I cannot do without flavoured vinegars and mustards at the moment. Tarragon dijon is a particular favourite and Hot Horseradish and Sweet Basil vinegars are fast becoming staple condiments.

Sweet Basil and Horseradish vinegars sound astonishingly good - do you buy them locally? (actually thinking of that, I could try and make my own!).


Actually although Viva Goa has gone the place is still run by the same guys. It's now called Crystal Palace Tandoori. This thread reminded me of the great Vindaloo they used to do so I will ask for it next time. The place is worth a try if you ever pass, especially as they use free range meat and fresh spices.

I think the curry club should be told but would they venture to CP for a lovely trad vindaloo I wonder ;-)


I know what you mean about making your own vinegars etc, I often think I should do that as it would possibly be cheaper (but its never as good somehow and by the time I have got round to doing it etc haha).


I got mine from a creake abbey food market in Norfolk where the supplier is based, they told me that their flavoured vinegars are grown with a vinegar mother (I hope I have got this right!) and so they are not simply 'infused' with e.g. herbs, or have the flavour added later to an existing vinegar if that makes sense. I think they sell in delis but am not sure. This government came in on a ticket of integrity and this type of thing is very damaging to that message - especially in light of other similar issues Starmer's front-bench has had - it cannot be one rule for them and one rule for us. @Dulwichway you know you're in political trouble when videos like that appear within hours of a story breaking.....and goes viral.
