It's difficult to have a serious conversation about the trade talks, as from what I can tell, there aren't any really. The UK appears to have rowed back from our commitments in the political declaration and are now pursuing a no deal, or at best a few small side deals. I'm not sure why Boris is doing this, but doesn't bode well from January next year. we may just be coming out of a coronavirus induced economic slump, only to impose economic sanctions on ourselves. It's all too crazy.

I agree rahrah. The political declaration is what Parliament voted for. It is also the platform on which the Government fought the election. But now, that same government has no regard for it. Everything those fighting it warned about, is now coming plainly true. The hedged bet by the ERG that in supporting the Withdrawal Agreement, that they would still be able to get their desired no deal, is also coming true.

Having said all of that though, it is still very early days in any trade talks. All we have seen so far, are the opening shots across the bows. Those pushing for the Leave side, promised we could have our cake and eat it, and that seems to be what they are going to demand. The EU on the other hand, are bound by their own concerns. Something will have to give if anything is to move forward.

Ironically, the EU may well be forced to change some of the very things exploited by the Leave side because of external events anyway.

A decision about whether or not to extend talks will be needed by June. The way things have gone so far (no real progress) suggests that without and extension, there will not be enough time to negotiate a comprehensive trade deal. All those people stockpiling, may as well get used to it imo. Come January there is going to be a lot of disruption.

Mind you, in some ways Coronavirus does provide Boris with a potential out. He may decide to extend the negotiations due to the 'exceptional circumstaces'. Assuming that he isn't as stupid as he looks and does actually want to reduce the amount of disruption and economic damage a no deal exit would cause.

Yes, I am inclined to think that the Coronavirus matter may well give him the get out he needs. The problem though is that he is surrounded by hard Brexit impatience. These things have a funny way of panning out often. In many ways, Boris has been extremely lucky with timing. This is true of populism in general. It requires certain crisis to in place to thrive.

Personally, I think Boris absolutely wants a deal with the EU and can see the dangers in not securing one. What he won't accept though, is that a comprehensive trade deal probably needs around four years to be completed. Getting to the end of his term as PM with a trade deal still in negotiation and the UK still technically in 'transition', is not going to work for him. But, resorting to WTO with a global recession threatening from the impact of COVID19, is a very poor place for the UK economy to be in. We have no leverage to get good and favourable trade agreements in such a scenario.

A lot of people quickly forget how the hardcore Brextremists think, right from the start of the referendum campaign they have played the blame game, so just as Covid 19 could be used as an excuse to extend the June deadline, it could also equally be used i.e. a C19 inspired economic slump, to blame and bury the effects of a No Deal Brexit...

BUT...

I would question the unity of the EU now. It has become apparent that Barnier is now dealing with pressures of individual nations? self interest as the talks begin and arguments rage as to who pays more, and receives less, to cover the shortfall left by the U.K.

Secondly, hopefully Covid-19 doesn?t get out of control but if it does it could rip the EU apart, especially if a financial crash results from the mayhem. Countries are already questioning the wisdom of ?just in time? supply chains and being dependent on low wage manufacturing in the Far East.

How would the EU be able to support the economies of 27 nations in a pandemic? Just one simple example would be a collapse of tourism - how many jobs would be at stake if Britons and Germans didn?t fight over sun loungers and we didn?t frequent French restaurants to be insulted?

There may be very strong arguments for going it alone as we reboot our economy and address green issues going forward.

It will be interesting to see how the EU react to what Austria has apparently said in that it will close it's border to Italians, therefore a loss of Freedom of Movement. Are they happy to waiver that principle albeit temporarily?...

I can see how expediency might require a temporary suspension that wouldn?t compromise the principle of Freedom of Movement.

The danger for the EU from my mind would be if individual countries put their national and citizens? interests before the greater Interest of the EU.

Let?s hope events don?t put unity to the test.
