Would that be the same festive fudge Johnson chomped on when he threw the DUP under Santa's sleigh by agreeing to a border down the Irish Sea?...

I?m sure you don?t need a history lesson from me but it?s because a coalition of Remainers forced BJ to request one.

Most of the miscreants were booted out at the general election and are probably now on furlough.

"I?m sure you don?t need a history lesson from me but it?s because a coalition of Remainers forced BJ to request one."

well I wouldn't WANT a history kesson from you, but that's very different

Johnson was forced to by reality - not a coalition of Remainers

Still - he's running out of excuses to hide behind now. And when he requests another extension in a couple of weeks we can chow down on some more popcorn

it wasn't the eu begging for previous extension and they aren't this time either - but they are open to the idea so that we don't embarrass/damage ourselves farther. And Johnson will request it because he knows the damge done to the UK will be on him if he doesn't

They are open to the idea because they are poo-ing their pants that Britain will become more competitive to their stale lumbering tortoise of a structure. Why else are they trying to impose restrictions on a sovereign power?

Because the sovereign power want the benefits of proximity to the eu without the obligations

Sovereignty isn't a one-way "win/win" - there are tradeoffs. And the UK is unwilling to countenance the cost of it's folly. They aren't restictions "imposed" on a sovereign country - they are the consequences explained clearly during teh referendum and dismissed as project fear.

Sovereign nation(s) imposing restrictions on another sovereign nation(s) as part of a trade deal. Welcome to the world of trade deals keano...

We definitely will be in a terrible position trading on WTO terms with the biggest recession the world has ever seen looming. Covid had been bad enough for UK business so far. Imagine the impact of WTO terms and tariffs! Only a lunatic would persist with a hard Brexit right now.

Unfortunately, all the lunatics are currently in the Government and pushing hard for exactly this, a no-deal Brexit. Covid has been a nice distraction for them - allows them to kick the negotiating can down the road a bit, blame the EU for lack of progress and then sell everything off to the Americans in a "trade deal" that rips up food standards, public services and public protections and turns the UK into a paradise for disaster capitalists who, coincidentally, are the same people who fund the Conservative Party.

" a load of unelected EU apparatchiks who want to spend our money and tell us what to do"

you do know this is not normal language? normal people don't speak like this? and bajillions of people of all classes in EU countries just wouldn't even recognise what you are saying?

Maybe people in the EU aren?t as daft as you think when it comes to the English language Sephiroth.

European Council president Charles Michel says the EU is "ready to put a tiger in the tank but not to buy a pig in a poke".

Give me a shout if those who?ve received a British education don?t understand what he said

And the madness of hard Brexit supporters continues.....

Keano, we are about to enter the biggest recession ever on WTO terms. We are not going to be any threat to the EU or any other trading block as we scramble to save our economy. Oh and you might want to ask why government are refusing to share the details of any agreed trades deals with Parliament, even after they are signed, while you are at it.

    • Received this email today re the partial reopening of the pool.  What I found a bit bizarre was the paragraph on 'pool hygiene', considering that on one of the last occasions I visited the pool, I witnessed a person, who later identified himself as the 'pool manager', dunking the changing room mats in the pool to rinse them after washing them poolside, leaving a deposit of grit etc on the pool steps.  When I complained, he didn't think he'd done anything wrong.  Maybe that's what messed up the pool filters!!! • Yes it could be a massive improvement and useful to hear that contracts have finally been awarded. I totally understand though why doubts are expressed about when the new square will open. This 2012 BBC article about mayoral funding after the London 2011 riots says "In Southwark, which saw parts of Peckham hit by the rioters, there are plans to redevelop Peckham Rye station". https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-19167948 A decade later, the first phase on Blenheim Grove - the white buildings with the new roof deck - was kind of completed by summer 2022. Yet three years on those buildings are still covered with hoardings, gathering ever more graffiti. There has been no clear or coherent explanation from Southwark why, just some excuses of water ingress. How much rent must have been lost in that time and who has taken the resultant financial hit? In that context is it unreasonable to doubt that the new square will be fully opened next year - rather we'll get a fenced in walkway leading through an 80% completed square that we're forced to squeeze through for years to come? Dare I also remind people that the reality of what was built on Blenheim Grove didn't look as good as the renders. With construction inflation recently so high, it's valid to ask how the resultant funding gap for the main phases of this scheme will be bridged. It's not just Southwark's inability to manage major projects that are a concern but also its senior leadership's reluctance to be transparent about problems let alone make any visible efforts to tackle them.
