English courses for Au Pairs

Recommended Posts

We are getting an Au Pair in September. She wishes to take some English classes several times a week. Can anyone tell me where their Au Pairs have attended such classes and the likely costs? Many thanks, Lucy

The school in Clapham is called ELT (English Language Training) http://www.elt-online.co.uk/

As dulwichquine said, it's easy to get to on the 37 or by bike. It's small, friendly and very much geared to the au pair market so a good place to meet other au pairs in the south London area. It's also fully accredited and offers a high standard of teaching.

I've never actually worked in a school in London so can't advise about specific schools but as general advice when looking for a school I would recommend going for one that is accredited by English UK or the British Council and make sure the teachers have a minimum of a CELTA or Trinity Certificate (ie they haven't just taken a TEFL teaching weekend course...) and also it is probably useful to ask about teacher turnover. A lot of London schools pay badly and have a very high turnover of staff and this is unsettling to students (and staff!). There has been a crackdown on dodgy schools but it is one of those markets where people can see an opporunity to take advantage of vulnerable foreign students. International House or Kaplan are big and well respected chains but don't have schools locally (just central London). There are lots of great smaller schools, but also some not so good.

If it seems too cheap there is probably a reason...

Hope that is helpful. And if you need a private tutor then get in touch!

I'm running an English class especially tailored to suit every Tuesday.

Pupils can sign up for either the 11am lesson (run from home- SE15 1UG) or the 7pm lesson (from a quiet table at The Victoria Inn, Bellenden Road). The price per hour is ?15.

It's a great way for au pairs to meet, learn English, get to know the area and generally feel like they are making the most of their time here.

Do get in touch to book!

Best wishes, Clara

I am planning to run a Early Years Education course for Au Pairs and Nannies which would improve English levels and also help them to bring out the best in children. Attached is a document about the course and what they would learn. As there is a focus on both writing and group dialogue it would help to facilitate English language development. The programme is specifically for Au Pairs and Nannies who look after children between the ages of 0-5 years. More information can be found at www.mamapapame.co.uk but the course description attachment should offer a clear outline.

    • I want to recommend Derek who has been gardening professionally for over 20 years. He recently did a job for me and I found him to be reliable, thorough and affordable. He is based in SE15 and can do most aspects of gardening be it general maintenance, hedge-cutting, planting, pruning, creating beds etc. Derek: 07376 041 321
    • Hi everyone, Moving to East Dulwich (SE22) from Melbourne, Australia; I've never actually been to the area (husband has) so the only thing i've got to go on is google street view, instagram and a few rogue tiktoks. Looks great though and excited for the move. Any cycling clubs that can be recommended or group rides? I'm thinking Peckham Cycle Club but wondering if there are any others in the area to consider; and secondly, any fenced dog parks / good spots to take our 2x dogs. Cheers!
    • ED to Peckham Rye, Peckham Rye to Catford.  15 minutes would be pushing it though.
