Nunhead Cemetery closed until further notice

I can understand that concept ruffers, I just don't see what the advantage is - or who benefits - closing weeks earlier than necessary.

Don't forget we're talking about a cemetery full to capacity, with very little space for mass death events !

PR sugar coating at a guess - imagine the public reaction to "We have to close the cemeteries now! Too many deaths!"

I agree with you on most of what your'e sayign btw - my daily walk is through Camberwell Old, or was anyway.

"..imagine the public reaction to "We have to close the cemeteries now! Too many deaths!"

If/when we get to that stage, it won't really matter what the public thinks and there'll be no need to sugarcoat it !

But, again, WHERE is the space in Nunhead cemetery ? It's full !

As an aside... A FONC member told me a couple of years ago there's 260,000 buried there, many in deep pauper/general graves (in the Northern corner).

  • 4 weeks later...

Back open again

"In line with updated guidance from national government, from 25 April, Nunhead Cemetery is open to the public daily. Opening times are:

8.30am to 8.30pm in April

8.30am to 9pm in May

This brings the closing time in line with Southwark?s other parks and open spaces during the emergency period, to give everyone additional time to visit safely while maintaining social distancing."

    • Where is a nearby Aldi?? I find the Sainsbury's in Forest Hill even more depressing than the Dog Kennel Hill one, if such a thing was possible.

    • Back to the good things about cycling - social rides organised by Southwark Cyclists, wonderful, always posted on the events page
    • I only go there about every couple of months now (to put my flimsy plastic in the recyling bins). What a dismal, grubby experience it has become! I don't go to Sainsburys Forest Hill either because of their requirement to have me download a parking app on my phone. Luckily we have many supermarket choices nearby and I find Waitrose deliveries, Sainsburys Local on foot, Lidl and Aldi cover it all.
